Visitors to our Factory Open Day on 3rd July will have the opportunity to view this barn conversion currently in progress!

The team have been making excellent progress on the barn conversion, transforming a previously unused timber structure on the factory premises into a high-quality, modern building.

The project began with the careful stripping back of the existing barn, taking the structure apart before rebuilding it to a significantly enhanced specification. This approach ensures that the barn’s original character will be retained while delivering the thermal efficiency and durability expected of a modern building.

Recent weeks have seen the external walls prepared and upgraded, with new structural elements, weatherproofing, and insulation systems being installed, strengthening the building and improving its long-term performance.

By the end of this week, the black agricultural-style cladding on two sides of the building will be complete, providing a clearer picture of the finished appearance. Internally, insulation works will also be finished, marking another important milestone in creating a comfortable and energy-efficient space.

Floor screed ✅

Liquid screed has become increasingly popular in modern construction due to its excellent thermal performance, efficiency and self-levelling ability.

This type of screed pairs perfectly with underfloor heating systems, as the flowing nature of the liquid allows it to fully encapsulate the pipes, removing air gaps and ensuring efficient heat transfer throughout the floor.

Compared to traditional sand and cement screed, liquid screed can often be installed more quickly as it is pumped directly onto the surface covering large areas, and it also dries faster, allowing other trades to continue work quickly.

Its flat and smooth finish provides an ideal base for the final floor coverings later in the build process.

With the structure now in place, the project is really starting to come to life. It's always rewarding to see a home take shape, and we're looking forward to following its progress through the next stages of construction.

With the UK experiencing record-breaking temperatures in May, many self-builders’ will be thinking about how to design a home that stays comfortable during the warmer months.

Here are a few design tips to keep your new home cool:

☀️ Good Insulation – quality insulation doesn't just keep your home warm in winter, it can also help reduce heat transfer in summer, keeping indoor temperatures more comfortable.

☀️ Strategic Glazing – energy-efficient double or triple glazing with low-E coatings can help limit heat gain. Consider the orientation of your home too, with particular attention to south- and west-facing elevations.

☀️ Solar Shading - incorporating both external and internal shading can make a big difference. Planting trees, installing pergolas or overhangs, and using thermal blinds, curtains or shutters can all help reduce direct solar gain.

A cooler home starts with thoughtful design. Small decisions made during planning can deliver years of comfort, while also helping to reduce energy costs.
