We’re delighted to have recently completed a programme of specialist works at Kisimul Castle, a Scheduled Monument situated on a small island just off the Isle of Barra in the Outer Hebride, this 15th-century castle presents a set of challenges you simply don’t encounter on a typical construction site.
Working for Historic Environment Scotland, our team delivered a range of carefully considered works, including:
🔨 New EKKI timber handrails and balustrades
⛪ Structural repairs and specialist leadwork to the chapel roof
🏗️ Construction of a new clerestory
💧 Installation of a liquid-applied waterproof membrane
🪟 Fabrication and installation of new windows
Working on a historic site like Kisimul Castle brings its own unique challenges, not least the Scottish Highland weather and the logistics of working on a remote island location -no road access meant we had to utilise helicopter to transport materials 🚁
Despite the elements, our team worked carefully to deliver the project to a high standard while respecting the character and significance of this remarkable historic building.
It was a fantastic project to be involved in, combining traditional craftsmanship, specialist conservation techniques, land sea and air transport and modern construction methods in a truly unique setting.
A big thank you to everyone involved in bringing the project to completion 🏰👏🏼
