"Stone cleaning is stone cleaning. Anyone can do it."

This is one of the most damaging myths in our industry.

The wrong method on sandstone, the stone that built the majority of Scotland's finest homes, can cause irreversible damage. Erosion of the surface layer. Increased moisture pe*******on. Accelerated decay of the mortar joints.

And the worst part? The damage rarely shows immediately. It shows three, five, ten years later, when it's expensive and complicated to fix.

DOFF cleaning exists precisely because stone is not all the same. Sandstone is soft. Limestone is reactive. Granite is hard but still needs the right approach.

We assess the stone before we ever touch it. We choose the method based on what we find. And we use the DOFF system because it's the safest effective cleaning technology available.

Your stone is worth getting right.

When a building is listed, Grade A, Grade B, Category A, Category B, any cleaning or restoration work has to meet strict standards.

You can't just send in a pressure washer.

The reason DOFF cleaning is approved for use on listed buildings and heritage sites across the UK comes down to one thing: it causes no measurable damage to the substrate.

Historic Environment Scotland and conservation bodies recognise that at low pressure, superheated steam is the only system that can remove decades of biological growth and pollution without compromising the stone surface or the historic fabric of the building.

We use DOFF on every clean we carry out, not just listed buildings. Because if it's safe enough for Scotland's most protected heritage buildings, it's the right way to treat any premium stonework.

If someone quoted you for stone cleaning tomorrow, would you know what questions to ask?

Here are the three we think matter most:

1. What system will you use?
(If the answer is a pressure washer, ask more questions)

2. Have you worked with this type of stone before?
(Sandstone, granite, and limestone all need different approaches)

3. Are you insured for heritage and listed buildings?
(Even if your property isn't listed, it tells you a lot about their level of operation)

We use the DOFF superheated steam system on every clean. We've worked with sandstone, granite, and limestone across Scotland. And yes, fully insured.

If you're getting quotes for stonework, feel free to send us a message. We're always happy to give honest advice, even if you don't end up using us.

Scotland is built from many different stones. Each one tells a different story and each one needs completely different care.

🟤 Sandstone
The warm, honeyed stone of Edinburgh's New Town, Glasgow's West End, and thousands of Victorian villas. Soft, porous, and beautiful but vulnerable to moisture, pollution, and the wrong cleaning method.

⬜ Granite
The hard, silver-grey stone of Aberdeen and the Highlands. Incredibly durable. Resistant to most staining. But when it does get dirty, it needs patience and the right chemistry.

🟫 Limestone
Less common but found in some of Scotland's most historic buildings. Can be dissolved by acidic cleaners. Requires the most gentle approach of all.

🤍 White Render
Found on properties across Scotland from rural cottages to modern extensions. Render attracts green algae, black mould, and tide marks faster than bare stone. It looks clean or it looks terrible, there is rarely an in between.

The good news is a DOFF clean restores it beautifully without cracking or damaging the surface beneath.

Do you know which stone or finish your property has? It matters more than most people realise.

Ever wondered how we clean Scotland's finest stone without damaging it?

The answer is DOFF.

DOFF is a superheated steam cleaning system that works at up to 150°C but at extremely low pressure.

That combination is everything.

The heat dissolves decades of biological growth, carbon deposits, pollution, and organic staining at the surface. The low pressure means the stone itself is never put under stress.

No acids. No harsh chemicals. No high-pressure blasting that strips and weakens the face of the stone.

Just superheated steam, precision control, and expertise.

It's used on some of the most historic and sensitive buildings in the UK, listed buildings, heritage sites, centuries-old sandstone because it's genuinely the safest effective cleaning method available.

It's also what we use on every premium stone clean we carry out across Scotland.

Your property tells a story.

The type of material doesn't matter but biological growth left untreated rewrites the story of your home in a way that's hard to undo.

Spring is the right time to assess what's there and treat it properly, before the growth embeds further over the warmer months.

Why bio cleaning matters and why the alternative isn't good enough.

Biological growth, algae, lichen, moss and black crusting doesn't just sit on the surface of stone. It roots into it. Over time, it breaks down the material and causes real, lasting damage.

Pressure washing removes what you can see. Bio cleaning treats the organism itself, eliminating regrowth from the source and preserving the stone underneath.

This is why what we do is restoration, not just cleaning. Every job is assessed by our professionals for the best and most protective approach.
