The Hawk Group of Companies was formed in 2003 by Co-Directors Scott Lawrence and Jamie Simmons with Hawk Builders and Shopfitters Ltd becoming the primary operating company in 2007. Wayne Marley joined as a Director in 2016 bringing another level of expertise to the team. Scott Lawrence completed his training with G Bainbridge and Sons Ltd, the well known and respected shopfitting company based

in Eastbourne specialising in shopfitting and high end joinery projects. Scott's training resulted in his ultimate role as Contracts Manager and his experiences gained through working with clients such as Halifax PLC, Abbey National, Starbucks Coffee, BHS, to name a few, created the perfect grounding for establishing Hawk Shopfitters Ltd. G Bainbridge and Sons Ltd became an operating company within the Llewellyn Group of Companies and this is where Scott and Jamie met and worked together. Jamie Simmons undertook a course of training and qualification with Walter Llewellyn and Sons Ltd, a large, family owned, building contractor based in Eastbourne. This training programme culminated in Jamie completing an Honours Degree in Construction Management and achieving Corporate Membership of the Chartered Institute of Building. Jamie worked up through the business from Trainee, through Site Management and then ultimately to the the position of Contracts Manager for main building projects operating out of the Eastbourne office of Llewellyn. Jamie's building knowledge was utilised to create Hawk Property Services Ltd, a building company focusing on domestic and commercial projects locally and to compliment the services being offered to the clients of Hawk Shopfitters Ltd. Wane Marley attended Hastings college studying OND in Building Services after which he joined Walter Llewellyn & Sons Ltd as a management trainee and attending p/t college studying HNC. On completion of training Wayne decided to specialise in surveying. Wayne completed parts I and II of the CIOB and achieved chartered status in 1995 (FCIOB) along with memberships of Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (MRICS) and the Chartered Institute of Management (FCMI). Hawk Shopfitters Ltd was combined with Hawk Property Services Ltd in 2007 to form Hawk Builders and Shopfitters Ltd and has traded since then providing both construction and shopfitting services to a broad spectrum of clients and sectors. After six months of methodical heritage restoration, the scaffold has been removed to reveal the completed works to the West Elevation of Compton Place, Eastbourne..
All four chimneys on this Elevation have been overhauled and repaired with new lime render where required and the pots secured. The dormers have been stripped, timber repairs completed, better ventilation tracks created and then recovered, with new lead work. The roof slates were all removed and individually numbered before being reinstated along with a batch of new Burlington Slate to replace damaged or degraded slates. The rendered elevation below had the old lead based paint removed, the render has been repaired with lime render and now decorated in a breathable Keim Paint system.
Such a lovely project to be involved with.

Before and after!

Careful and specialist refurbishment of this existing lead rainwater hopper.

Throughout the summer we have been undertaking the external maintenance programme to a spectacular Sussex Manor House. The property was fitted with these lead hoppers and rectangular downpipes around 100 years ago. Highly decorative, solid, sand cast lead.
This particular one has suffered from being very exposed to the prevailing winds and the lead front panel has thinned down and eventually failed. The rear of the same hopper had been gnawed by squirrels and needed repair as well.

We took a cast from another hopper, which was in better condition, and used that cast to create a new front panel, replicating the original details.

We are very excited to see this returned to the property and put back in place.

The Gothic style traceried stonework in front of the timber windows at All Saints, Eastbourne is original from its construction in 1868.
Using experienced tradesmen, all the Stonework was carefully inspected and any defective areas highlighted for repair or replacement. The four leave clover single glazed window (seen in the photos) had cracked and our specialist tradesmen hand cut the new glass on site to the exact shape required.

We recently completed a project within a large, grade 2* listed property, built in 1883-1884 with the incredibly opulent interior being fitted in 1889. It remains in excellent condition.
These photos are a selection of some of the elaborate fireplaces with over-mantels. The use of such exotic materials, at that time, was certainly a demonstration of wealth and status.

During our travels, we have the privilege of visiting properties with a fascinating history and a story to tell.

The attached pictures show some existing, decorative leaded lights which are around 140 years old and still remain. Within the small window you can make out the phrase “Facta Non Verba”.

This Latin phrase translates directly to “Deeds, Not Words.”

The phrase is intended to highlight the superiority of actions over words when dealing with personal struggles or the completion of tasks.

Beneath the large shrink wrapped and lidded scaffold lies the West Elevation of this listed Manor House. The existing roof slates and dormers were letting rainwater into the building creating numerous issues with internal damage and decay to structural timbers. A decision was made to upgrade the detailing to provide new ventilated lead clad dormers which involved the full refurbishment of the roof slopes. New roof slates were purpose made by the Burlington Slate Quarry in Cumbria and incorporated alongside re-used slates. Existing lead soil pipes have been removed and have been repaired and reshaped, prior to re-fixing onto newly formed lead supports.

An interesting little task today. Putting specialist glazing tape over cracked glass to prevent it getting any worse or failing completely. What's so interesting about that? Well, consider the fact that a lot of our projects involve older properties, listed properties and occasionally, properties of significant historic interest.

This piece of glass, albeit simple plain glass, would have been installed in the late 1800's. Further more, this was hand scratched by Alix Von Hesse in 1892, just prior to her marriage to Tsar Nicholas II, the Russian Emperor, in 1894. Alix, later known as Alexandra, was Grand Daughter of Queen Victoria and became the last Empress of Russia when Nicholas abdicated in 1917.

Our very temporary repair is intended to protect and stabilise the glass until a specialist glass conservator can be appointed to either repair the glass or remove and preserve it.

An enormous temporary roof and working space, with full shrink wrap enclosure and dedicated loading bays allows for the full removal of all slates from the west elevation of this Grade 1 listed building. The building is undergoing a phased approach to essential repairs and this phase sees improvement of the weathering and ventilation details around the dormers, leadwork replacement and then reinstatement of the roof slates incorporating a percentage of new slates to match the originals.
All the existing slates carefully removed, numbered and stacked to ensure they are replaced in the exact same position during the reinstatement. New Westmoreland Olive Green Slates, from Burlington Slate Ltd, are on site and available where replacements are identified.

Work to existing buildings can often be a voyage of discovery. You can never be completely sure what you might encounter and what tasks may await you. This is a fine example. The beautiful rectangular bay to the side of this building has presented an ongoing issue with water ingress. At first glance, from a distance, all looks relatively neat and tidy. Not the case! Cue a scaffold build aimed at creating a work environment and protecting the building from the elements and then invasive investigation. As we peel back the layers we identify that this has clearly been a long term issue and has been patched up and re-covered by others repeatedly. When we get down to the original lead dome covering, and below that to the structure, we find extensive rot and decay from years of water ingress. This bay now requires specialist steel refurbishment and repair, reinstatement of the decking material to form the curve shape and then re-covering with new lead. Meticulous dismantling and labelling of components is required such that anything that can be re-used is reinstated in exactly the position it came from. Components beyond repair will have to be replaced but this has to be minimised with a strong focus on salvage rather than replacement.
