Introducing our lab team who will help Rhizocore achieve our mission of helping the world grow stronger, taller and healthier trees.

David Satori – Chief Mycologist
David leverages scientific insights to develop ways of applying fungi to solve ecological challenges, and has helped to establish our fungal culture collection, and is now focusing on using mycoremediation to clean up polluted waterways in sensitive habitats.

Roisin Moore – Laboratory Manager
Roisin’s main responsibilities covers managing lab experiments and accelerating product development. Her background in Precision Medicine and Pharmaceutical Innovation from the University of Glasgow has equipped her in developing cultivation techniques of mycorrhizal fungi.

Alison Stewart – Laboratory Technician
Alison’s background in Ecological and Environmental Science from the University of Edinburgh places her as the ideal person to maintain our Polytunnel nursery which we use extensively for screening and testing our products. Alison’s also acts as a support for the lab team and gives the extra pair of hands we need in our collection trips and mycorrhization experiments.

Alex George Leman – Bioprocess Engineer
Alex came to Rhizocore equipped with his background in Chemical Engineering and Energy Engineering from Heriot-Watt University and now oversees one of the most crucial elements of our start-up: the scaling-up process. With his expertise in the upstream fermentation of mycorrhizal fungi, Rhizocore would be able to help supply a larger number of tree planters with mycorrhizal inoculum.

We wouldn't expect a tree from southern England to grow very well in the Scottish Highlands, or vice versa, so we shouldn't expect mycorrhizal fungi to do the same.

At Rhizocore’s tree nursery, we test our mycorrhizal seedlings by associating trees sourced from the same region that the fungi were, and we do that under varying fertiliser regimes to see which strains perform best under which soil conditions. From tree height, dry shoot weight, dry root weight, and the extent of fungal colonisation, all of these factors are helping us compile the most comprehensive mycorrhizal database out there.

Wrapping up our last UK collection for 2022 at Cornwall. Our lab team has a done great job foraying across the UK for mycorrhizal fungi! 🍄

Climate and soil type really makes a difference in the type of fungi available, we even found some Amanita muscaria growing in sand! Documenting fungi growing conditions (altitude, soil type, climate, etc.) is an integral part of our process so we can help clients
determine which strain would maximise benefits for their trees.

Last week we introduced RhizoPellet, our solution to growing healthier resilient trees. But what about growing seedlings indoors? 🌱

For tree nurseries and smaller indoor planting, we have RhizoBead to cover the job. RhizoBeads are alginate beads containing live strains of mycorrhizal fungi. By adapting our product into bead form, it becomes more suitable for delicate planting in nursery environments.

Benefits:
1) Safe
Our beads are made with alginate which does no environmental damage to soils.

2) Pure
Beads contain live mycorrhizal fungi, not spores. This means roots make direct contact with the fungi itself thus lowering contamination risks.

3) Native
Beads contain live fungal mycelium, not spores. This means roots make direct contact with the fungi and create symbiotic assicoations faster.

4) Easy to apply
Beads can be directly inputted into some seed sowing operational machinery saving application time.

The Rhizocore team ventures into the woodlands of south England this season to expand our fungal culture collection. We now hold key ectomycorrhizal species from 12 of the 24 seed zones in the UK, meaning we can now apply our locally-adapted mycorrhizal inoculum to approximately half of the UK's planting sites!

Introducing the RhizoPellet, our answer to growing healthier trees faster without compromising on soil health!

How it works:
In nature, healthy trees have symbiotic relationships with mycorrhizal fungi to boost its growth and adaptability. Rhizocore harness this natural phenomenon through the RhizoPellet, a solid substrate encapsulating live ectomycorrhizal fungi and which can be easily planted alongside your sapling.

Benefits of RhizoPellet:
1) Safe
Our pellets are made with 100% natural biodegradable materials and can be used as a healthier alternative to chemical fertilisers

2) Pure
Pellets contain live mycorrhizal fungi, not spores. This means roots make direct contact with the fungi itself lower contamination risks for you

3) Native
Each strain goes through rigorous screening before being encapsulated and sent out, we guarantee 100% of the fungi’s origin and optimize your sapling growth by matching the product to your seed zone

4) Cost-effective
Pellets are easy to handle and apply during tree planting, one pellet per tree, saving you time during application and money in chemical fertilizer wastage.

The holds a special place in our hearts as they are one of the first partners, we worked with in developing our mycorrhizal technology.

We are back again this year for more fungal collections and also to carry out growth and survival measurement on the previous trees we’ve treated with our inoculum.

Is there a better way to plant stronger, healthier trees? 🌲🌳🌲🌳

If anyone were to solve this problem it would be dream team Toby Parkes and David Satori. Toby’s expertise in plant sciences is backed up with his BSc in Biology and more recently his PhD in Biochemistry where he had developed a new technique for producing disease resistant plants.

Meanwhile, David holds a MSc in Plant and Fungal Taxonomy, Diversity and Conservation with industry experience as a former Species Conservation Researcher during his time in the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.

Together, they quickly spotted a missing player in the tree planting scenario – mycorrhizal fungi 🍄

In nature, trees and mycorrhizal fungi form symbiotic relationship resulting in stronger trees and healthier soils. By harnessing this relationship, we can increase tree growth and tree resilience with the added benefit of improving soil health as well.

Toby and David founded Rhizocore in 2021, bringing a new nature-based solution to tree planters all across the world 🌱
