We attended an Intergas boiler fault today.
Unfortunately diagnosis points to 3 possible faulty components which are all in excess of £200 (and no stock of one component- Intergas themselves are waiting on stock!). Our recommendation was for our customer to contact Intergas for a fixed price repair as likely to be quicker and cheaper in the long run.
Our customers just been back in touch to say that Intergas can’t attend until middle of February! We are trying to figure out the cheapest and quickest options…
Moral of the story- stick with well known (and preferably uk made) brands.

Top tip. With the current sustained low temperatures it’s possible for condensate pipes which run outside to freeze. This can cause a boiler to stop working. Pouring hot (but not boiling) water from a kettle over the affected pipe outside can thaw things out and get the boiler running again ( this process may need to be repeated while the low temperatures continue ).
There are other solutions for long term protection against freezing such as installing trace heating (which we can do).

Scotia Property Heating (Domestic) Ltd is now closed for a well earned Christmas break. We hope that all our customers have a warm and wonderful Christmas and Happy New Year.
We will be back on Monday and Tuesday next week to attend to any breakdowns resuming normal service on Monday 5th January.

With the weather starting to get cooler after what has been quite a warm summer (for a change), now is a good time to test your heating to make sure it operates as you expect. We have had a few calls to “no heat” recently as heating is turned on. Don’t leave it until you really need your heating to find out there’s a problem.
We will always do our best to attend asap but it’s easier to schedule things in when there’s less urgency.

If you have turned thermostatic radiator valves off (not unusual at this time of year). If you have also turned your heating program to off, it’s a good idea to turn the thermostatic valves back ON. Reason being that they can be prone to sticking closed if left in the off position.

Just on the back of a customer calling and asking for an engineer to check a fault of no heating (hot water ok). I suggested they check the room thermostat was set above the ambient temperature as it is quite warm today. I received a call a short time later to confirm that this was indeed what was stopping the heating from coming on. Happy to have resolved the “fault “ over the phone and saved our customer an unnecessary call out charge. 😁

Heat pumps are part of the solution but the electric infrastructure is not there yet! There is a future for gas boilers for a while yet! 100% Electric still seems a long way off- certainly beyond the lifespan of a new boiler at this point in time.

On a recent job where we were replacing a few radiators we found the cause of why one of them “has never really heated properly“. Despite a notch being cut in a joist for the pipe, the previous installer clearly didn’t manage to locate the pipe within the notch! The section of pipe was replaced and the new radiator is now heating properly and our customer is very happy 😃

We recently completed the replacement of a small commercial boiler (65kW) installation at a large Domestic property. The old boiler was floor standing and sat on fireproof board over solid hardwood flooring. It is clear that fireproof board doesn’t offer much insulation as the hardwood flooring was charred through to the underlying floor boards and clearly a fire risk!!! 😱
No such worries with the new Worcester Bosch 7000WP wall mounted boiler that we installed which was straight forward and included an up-grade of the heating controls to Hive active heating (V3).

This is not good news! Heat pumps are not the complete solution at the moment. While we do need to work towards net zero this is again penalising those that are already struggling with the cost of living.

A row between top Tories over the transition away from gas boilers looks set to be settled, with a push for heat pumps to go ahead, Sky News understands.

Some hard graft today. Removing cast sectional boiler and getting the new boiler into the boiler room. Due to such tight access some dismantling of the new boiler was required. All by hand (with only the aid of some rope and a bit of rigging).
