It’s one of the questions we’re asked every year — and buying the right amount isn’t as simple as guessing how many bags will fit in the log store.

Your winter firewood requirements depend on things like:

🏡 The size of your home
🔥 How often you use your stove
🌡️ How well your property is insulated
🪵 The type and quality of firewood you burn
🔥 Whether your stove is supplementary or your main source of heat

As a rough starting point:

🔥 Occasional weekend fires — 0.5–1m³
🔥 Most evenings — 1–2m³
🔥 Daily winter use — 2–4m³
🔥 Primary heating — 4–8m³+

But every household is different.

And one bit of advice from years of supplying firewood?

Don’t wait for the first freezing week to discover you’ve underestimated it. Demand typically rises sharply once the cold weather arrives, while properly stored kiln-dried firewood can be bought ahead and kept under cover with good airflow until you need it.

🪵 Is It Illegal to Sell Wet Logs in Ireland?

With Ireland’s firewood moisture rules changing on 1 September 2026, it’s a question more stove owners should be asking.

For relevant firewood sold in quantities of 2m³ or less, the legal moisture limit is currently below 25%.

🔥 From 1 September, that drops to below 20%.

But there’s a bigger point for anyone buying firewood:

You’re buying wood — not water.

Wet logs can be harder to light, produce more smoke, give you less useful heat and contribute to deposits in your stove and chimney. Properly dried firewood burns far more effectively.

At Surefire Wood, we produce and kiln dry our own firewood, using locally sourced, FSC®-certified timber. That gives us control over the process from the timber coming in to the finished kiln-dried logs going out to our customers across Ireland.
