Here’s one we completed a while back, and it’s a great example of just how much of a difference the correct cleaning and repair work can make to traditional sandstone.

This beautiful property is built using Locharbriggs sandstone, but over the years the stonework had become tired and weathered, with areas of open, cracked and deteriorating mortar joints requiring attention.

Our work included:

🧱🔥 WHEN A “QUICK CEMENT REPAIR” TURNS INTO A PROPER STONEMASONRY JOB… 🔥🧱

Take a look at this chimney restoration we completed in Motherwell.

Unfortunately, this chimney had previously been repaired using inappropriate cement mortar, and over time it had contributed to significant deterioration and damage to the original Locharbriggs sandstone.

Cement can be far too hard and impermeable for many traditional sandstone buildings. Instead of allowing moisture to evaporate through the mortar joints, moisture can become concentrated within the softer sandstone — contributing to spalling, delamination and deterioration of the stone itself.

Basically… the mortar survived better than the chimney did! 😬

We fully stripped the defective areas back and rebuilt the chimney properly using traditional materials and techniques.

🔨 THE RESTORATION INCLUDED:

✅ Defective cement mortar fully removed
✅ Damaged Locharbriggs sandstone removed
✅ New sandstone individually cut, dressed and fitted
✅ New leadwork installed and correctly dressed
✅ New Indian sandstone coping stone fitted
✅ Original chimney pot retained and re-haunched using lime mortar
✅ Chimney fully repointed using a suitable lime mortar
✅ Traditional finish sympathetic to the original building

Rather than covering the problem with another repair, we addressed the damaged materials and rebuilt the affected areas correctly.

🏠 LIME MORTAR & STONE REPAIRS COMPLETED IN LARKHALL 🏠

Another job completed at the start of this week in Larkhall, bringing this sandstone frontage back into good condition while keeping everything within the customer’s budget.

The front façade had areas of failed cement mortar, along with deterioration around the roofline, stonework and chimney. We carried out:

🔨 Fully raked out the failed cement mortar from the front façade
🧱 Repointed throughout using the correct lime mortar, colour matched to complement the original stonework
🏠 Removed and replaced the failed mortar skews between the slates and sandstone coping stones
🪨 Repointed the peak stonework
🔥 Removed and replaced the failed chimney haunching with suitable lime mortar
🛠️ Carried out Lithomex stone repairs, including pinning and stitching to cracked areas where required

All repairs were approached with the original sandstone in mind, using breathable, compatible lime mortar rather than hard cement, while working to a solution that suited the customer’s budget.

The finished result has made a massive difference to the property, and most importantly, Jim was over the moon with the work! 🙌

🧱 ANOTHER WALL PUT RIGHT! 🧱

We’ve just completed this partial wall rebuild on behalf of the council — and, well… the previous attempt definitely gave us something to work with. 😂👀

Safe to say, lime mortar was not invited to the first job! 🤦‍♂️

We stripped the defective work back, rebuilt the affected section properly and finished everything using the correct lime mortar, ensuring the repair is compatible with the existing masonry and built to last.

There’s a big difference between simply making a wall look repaired and actually repairing it the right way. 👌
