The Kimberley Lodge public café and radio station project reflects my approach as an architect, engineer and designer. The building is modest and respectful of the existing historic structure while bringing new life and purpose into it. It is not an architectural “look at me” project. The real complexity lay in merging a café, a radio station and professional recording facilities into one coherent building.
This outcome was the result of teamwork. I collaborated closely with everyone involved, offering support wherever needed, and we helped each other throughout the process. I completed the planning application and design work pro bono - a contribution of around £10,000 - because I believe in Falmouth and its community, and I consider myself part of it.
My practice carries a German name - Mär Studio - with the Umlaut “ä” intentionally included as a clear reference to my German heritage. Although my own surname is Hormann, without an Umlaut, the name Mär Studio expresses the cultural and linguistic roots that shape my engineering-led approach to architecture. At the same time, I have lived and worked in Cornwall for over 20 years, and I am part of the local community. And my choir helped me sustain the project and overcome stressful challenges. Thank you men!
If you are looking for an architect with integrity and a proven track record - including the Brain of Brian barge in Penryn, Jubilee Warehouse in Penryn, which I completed when I was the sole founder of Marraum, the Kimberley Park bandstand, as well as numerous houses and community projects - feel free to email me or meet me on Killigrew Street.
