Im often asked why use lime instead of cement?

The main reason is breathability. Lime mortar has a porous structure that allows moisture to move through the walls and evaporate naturally, rather than getting trapped inside.
A simple way to think of it β€” lime is like an Aero chocolate bar, full of tiny air pockets, whereas cement is more like a solid Galaxy bar. Cement is much denser and stronger, which makes it great for modern construction, but in older buildings it can trap moisture and lead to damp and decay over time.
Using the right materials for the right building is key.

Sorting out the work from previous builders using cement on lime buildings.
Lime is breathable. It lets moisture move in and out of the wall.
Cement is not. It traps moisture.
Lime is slightly flexible and can handle small movement.
Cement is hard and brittle.
Old buildings naturally move a bit (temperature, ground movement, age). Cement can’t cope with that so it cracks strait back out.

Lime mortar Repointing completed in Waterlooville, really enjoyed bringing this 1920 property back to life πŸ‘ŒπŸ§±

πŸ‘‰ Brickwork is the most visible part of your property πŸ‘€

πŸ‘‰ After rain, water can freeze in the bricks & surrounding mortar, expanding & causing damage. This freeze - thaw weathering does not look good & ignoring damaged or sub standard mortar could lead to a damp & cold house 😰

πŸ‘‰ How do I know if I need my property Repointed 🀷

πŸ‘‰ Cracks in the mortar that are clearly visible. Gaps between mortar & masonry. Loose bricks / structures 🏚️

πŸ‘‰ The benefits of having your property repointed include, structural integrity, appearance, weatherproofing, higher property value & a warmer property πŸ”₯

Probably the worst gable end i have seen. Looking forward to sorting this 1 out & protecting the families home.
