This catches a lot of people out. Having solar panels and a battery doesn’t automatically mean the home carries on as normal during a power cut. Most systems need extra equipment and specific configuration to provide backup.

There’s also the question of what you actually want to keep running. A few essential circuits is a very different job to backing up the whole house.

The energy price cap increased by 4% from 1 October. It’s the kind of headline that understandably gets homeowners thinking about what they could change at home.

One of the most persistent heat pump myths is that they stop working once it gets properly cold. They’re built for exactly that. Modern air source heat pumps are designed to run through winter conditions, with the system working harder as the temperature drops rather than giving up.

What decides how well that works in practice is the design behind it: the heat loss of the property, the radiators or underfloor heating, the required flow temperature, and the size of the heat pump itself.

The household’s electricity use matters too.
