A solar survey should involve more than checking whether panels will fit on the roof.

The household’s electricity use matters too.

How much is being used? When is it being used? Could that change if an EV charger or heat pump is added later?

Then there is the practical side. Roof space, orientation, shading, cable routes and possible locations for the inverter and battery.

Those details shape the design and help determine what will actually work for the property.

The panels may be the visible part. The survey is where the system begins to take shape.

One street. Five Jem solar installations.
And we’re not finished yet.

This is Clevedon Gardens near Swindon, where we’ve now installed solar for five of the nine homes on the street.

There’s something pretty satisfying about seeing that from above.

One installation leads to a conversation.
That conversation leads to another neighbour getting in touch.
And before long, you can actually see the trust spreading along the road.

For us, that kind of repeat local work means a lot. People have seen the systems, spoken to their neighbours and felt confident enough to ask us to help with their own homes too.

We’ll see if we can complete the set one day.

Two solar quotes can look remarkably similar on paper.
But they may be based on completely different thinking.

One may be designed around how your household actually uses electricity. Another may use a standard system size.
One may clearly account for the inverter, battery, warranties and long-term support. Another may focus mainly on the headline price.

Those details do not always jump out from the total at the bottom.
Before choosing, ask what the system has been designed around, what is included and which assumptions have been used.

A solar installation should fit the home and the people living in it. Not simply the package an installer happens to sell most often.

Capacity is often the first number people compare when choosing battery storage.
But it is only part of the picture.

It does not tell you how much of that capacity is usable, how performance may change over years of regular use, or what the warranty actually covers.

It also does not tell you whether the battery has been matched properly to the solar system and the household’s energy pattern.

Before choosing, look beyond the biggest number on the specification sheet.
Ask about usable capacity, expected lifespan, warranty terms and how the whole system has been designed to work together.

Thinking about battery storage? Speak to Jem Energyabout the right setup for your home.

Already have solar panels but no battery?
They do not always need to be installed at the same time.

Battery storage can be added to many existing solar systems, allowing more of the electricity generated during the day to be used later.

That could mean using stored solar power in the evening, rather than exporting it when the household does not need it.

The right battery still needs to be chosen around the existing system and the way the home uses electricity.
So the first step is checking compatibility and understanding what you want the battery to do.

Already have solar? Ask Jem Energy whether battery storage could work with your system.

People are often surprised by the cost of a heat-pump installation.
It helps to understand what sits behind the quote.

Replacing a boiler can be relatively straightforward. Installing a heat pump involves designing a heating system around the property.

The heat loss needs calculating. Radiators or underfloor heating need checking. Hot-water demand and flow temperatures need working out too.

That groundwork takes time and expertise.

Two quotes may include similar-looking equipment, but very different levels of design and preparation. The difference usually becomes clear once the system is running.

So before comparing the totals, ask what work has gone into reaching them.

Solar panels do not need blazing sunshine or unusually hot weather to generate electricity.

They work from daylight.
That means they can still generate on cloudy days, although output will naturally vary with the conditions.

What often matters more is the property itself.

Roof direction.
Available space.
Shading.
The system design.

So while a bright August day makes solar easy to picture, the real question is how well the system has been planned for that particular home throughout the year.

There is a big difference between buying the kit and getting the right system for the property.

The design.
The installation.
The setup.
The support afterwards.

Because a better solar result is not just about what goes on the roof. It is about how well the whole thing is planned and delivered.

If you’ve been researching solar, you’ve probably seen the term MCS certified come up.

That is not just a badge.

MCS is a recognised UK quality mark for small-scale renewables such as solar and heat pumps, covering product and installation standards. It can also matter for things like Smart Export Guarantee eligibility, where suppliers may ask for evidence that the system and installer are suitably certified.

For most homeowners, the question is not just whether solar is worth doing.
It is whether it is being done properly.

That is where standards matter.

There is a big difference between buying technology and getting a system designed properly for the property.

That difference usually shows up in the detail.

The survey.
The design.
The installation.
The setup.
The aftercare.

That is where better-performing systems usually start.
