🛢️ Star Multifuels - Oil Market Update

Thursday 8 October

Oil prices are moving higher this morning, with concerns over shipping security in the Middle East and severe weather in the US influencing the market.

What’s driving the movement?

▪️ Attacks on tankers: A tanker was hit off the coast of Qatar on Wednesday. Increased attacks in the Persian Gulf are raising concerns about the safe movement of oil through important shipping routes.

▪️ Regional tensions: Further attacks in Saudi Arabia and reports of possible US military action against Iran are adding uncertainty. Markets react to the risk of disruption, even before any supplies are lost.

▪️ US weather: Traders are also watching Storm Isaias, which threatens oil operations along the US Gulf Coast. Its path and strength will help determine the impact on production and refining.

Any more positive news?

The US stock report showed an improvement in distillate days cover—a measure of how long stocks of fuels such as diesel and heating oil would last at current demand. This increased to 29 days, slightly above the seasonal five-year average of 28.5 days.

Why does this affect us locally?

UK fuel prices are influenced by international markets. Even fuel refined close to home is affected by global supply, shipping costs and demand.

This morning’s picture is one of upward pressure on prices, although healthier distillate stock cover provides some balance. It is a changing situation, rather than a certain indication of where prices will go next.

With prices falling and business picking up, we decided we needed a new tanker driver to take some of the work load off the other lads!

He's just been out on his first load, and hasn't done a bad job to be fair. He's a bit erratic and quick to blame others, and we can't always understand him, but I'm sure he'll come good in time.
