Saudi is becoming another important part of the global engine supply chain. Rolls Royce and MAKEEN recently signed an agreement allowing their marine engines to be assembled and manufactured locally in Saudi Arabia.

It is the first licensed production of mtu high speed engines in the country, with marine applications the initial focus and rail targeted later.

Over time, local production creates demand for servicing, replacement units, components, spare parts and aftermarket support. For the wider diesel market this shows how global the engine ecosystem continues to be.

Navigator Gas is converting two more vessels from their existing Everllence B&W engines to ethane operation after 8 years experience with the same type of retrofit on Navigator Aurora.

In many cases, engines can be converted, repurposed, rebuilt or adapted to suit new requirements. Older engines, specialist units and existing equipment still have significant value when there is a practical way to keep them working.

The diesel market is about far more than complete engines. Accelleron recently announced that projects involving more than 100 of its new marine turbochargers were secured within just 4 months of launch.

The parts market is so important. Turbos, components and specialist engine parts all have their own global demand, often long after the original engine has entered service.

You do not need to have a complete engine sitting in stock to have something valuable. One specialist component can be exactly what a buyer somewhere else in the world is searching for.

A tale of two testimonials.

One seller listed an engine and sold it within weeks. Another waited 8 months.

Very different timelines. Same result. The second engine had already been sitting in inventory for more than 3 years before it was listed.

That’s the reality of selling specialist engines. Sometimes the right buyer is already looking. Sometimes it takes a little longer for them to come along.

But if the engine isn’t visible, they can’t find it.

List it. Leave it working for you. And give the right buyer the chance to find it.

Cummins recently highlighted a growing trend in the off-highway sector: businesses are choosing to replace tired engines rather than replace the entire machine.

Rising equipment prices, borrowing costs and long lead times are all making that decision more attractive across construction, agriculture and industrial applications.

Engine based power is growing in Southeast Asia. DEUTZ recently announced the expansion of its Energy business, starting at Electric & Power Indonesia.

The company is targeting the region with emergency and continuous power solutions ranging from 10kW to 10MW, identifying ASEAN as an important growth market.

Every new power system becomes part of a long term support network, requiring maintenance, replacement engines, components and spare parts throughout its working life.

As engine based power expands into new markets, so does the potential demand for used engines, rebuildable units and surplus stock.

What is sitting in a warehouse in one country could become an essential part of a power system somewhere else in the world.

40 years later, diesel's still powering the relationship.

Rolls Royce recently announced that 33 mtu Series 4000R engines will be supplied for new freight locomotives in South Korea (interestingly, mtu first supplied engines to Korean railways back in 1987).

Locomotives, vessels, generators and heavy machinery can remain operational for decades, creating ongoing demand for maintenance, replacement engines, components and specialist parts.

An older engine or component may no longer be needed by one operator, but could be exactly what another needs to keep equipment working.
