There have been a few new additions to the AIS fleet in recent months. 🚐

As our team continues to grow, and with some of our existing vehicles starting to show their age, it felt like the right time to make a necessary upgrade.

Reliable vehicles are an important part of what we do, helping our technicians get to site safely, efficiently and with the equipment they need to carry out the job properly.

It’s another investment in the business, our team and the service we provide to our clients.

UT Calibration Blocks vs Reference Blocks - what’s the difference? 🔍

A calibration block is used to set up and verify the UT system, such as range, zero, probe index or refracted angle.

A reference block contains known reflectors that provide a defined ultrasonic response, allowing indications in the test piece to be assessed against an established reference level. 📐

There can be some overlap, and the same block may sometimes serve more than one purpose depending on the technique and procedure.

The key is using the correct block for the material, technique and inspection being carried out.

At AIS, we maintain a vast suite of UT calibration and reference blocks in a range of materials and configurations to support niche and often specific client, component and inspection requirements.

Even where a client has its own in-house NDT capability, independent third-party inspection is often still required.

On critical or high-value projects, an external inspection body can provide an additional level of impartiality, verification and confidence that the specified requirements have been met.

It is not necessarily about duplicating the work already carried out. It can be about independently confirming results, witnessing key stages, reviewing specific areas, or providing additional assurance to the client, asset owner or other interested parties.

For higher-risk work, that independent perspective can be an important part of the overall quality and inspection process.

Technician Appreciation Post 🔍👏

At Axiom, the standard of the work comes down to the people doing it.

This week we’re giving some appreciation to Ged Donnelly.

Ged brings experience across several NDT methods, including MPI, DPI, Visual, Eddy Current and UT Forgings, and he’s been part of a lot of the inspection work that keeps jobs moving properly for our clients, and tends to keep a smile on their faces too.

Reliable technicians make a huge difference wherever the site is, whatever the time is - and Ged is just that!

He knows our protocols, and the limitations of certain methods, as well as knowing when something needs a closer look. That judgement has been built in his over half a decade of doing inspection. It’s been rewarding for us to see him develop from a shy school leaver to a well rounded team leader.

With UT Welds fast approaching on the horizon, I’m sure as gallus as Ged is, he will be the first to admit, he’s still got plenty of learning to do! Let’s get after it!

Traceability is one of those things nobody cares about until they really need it.

Then it matters a lot.

The client job number, part serial number, weld ID, material, technique, consumables, equipment, calibration, operator, acceptance criteria - all of it needs to tie together.

Good inspection work is not just finding defects.

It’s being able to prove what was inspected, when, how it was inspected, and what standard it was judged against.

Our technicians make sure all the right information is there and accounted for before the dye goes on. In turn, as things develop, the client can be at ease. 🔍 👏

Close Visual Inspection is more than just a quick look over. 👀

A thorough visual inspection can identify a wide range of surface defects and conditions before any further NDT is carried out.

Cracks, corrosion, undercut, surface damage, weld profile issues, deformation and other visible imperfections can all be picked up through a properly conducted close visual inspection.

Good lighting, access, surface condition and an experienced inspector all matter.

Sometimes, the simplest inspection method can tell you a lot. ✅

Fan Pic Friday! 📸

A recent one sent in by Daniel, a past colleague, showing two of our senior technicians, Mark and Craig, having a rare old time offshore back in the early 90s!

This was taken on the Beryl Bravo platform, back when the PPE was slacker, the hair was questionable, and every offshore photo looked like it had already survived three winters before it was developed.

There’s a lot of history in pictures like this. Different era, different kit, same trade. Long days, tight spaces, questionable weather, and the kind of offshore humour that probably wouldn’t make it through a modern induction video.

Great to see these old memories being shared, and even better when they involve faces still connected to the AIS story today. And great to see both Mark and Craig in a bit better shape!

You can learn the method in training, but site judgement is built one awkward job at a time.

A lot of NDT is taught in training centers, procedures and exams. That foundation matters, and nobody gets around it.

But there is another part of the job that only really comes from being out with experienced technicians.

How to deal with awkward access. How to keep your notes useful when the job is moving quickly. How to take photos that will still make sense in the report. How to ask the client the right question before you start. How to notice when something on site does not match what was written in the scope.

That side of the trade is passed on job by job.

Scotland needs good NDT technicians coming through, and they need more than certificates. They need time around people who care about doing the work properly.

Inspection gets you to some weird and wonderful places! 🚐

One week you can be out on one of the remote isles of Scotland taking in the sights, working around weather, ferries and whatever the day throws at you.

The next you’re down in the deepest parts of a ship in dry dock in Greenock, checking areas most people will never see.

Then it might be the other end of the scale entirely, up at height on a bridge, or on airport infrastructure somewhere around the UK, with a very different set of risks, access challenges and controls.

That’s one of the parts of this industry we’ve always liked. No two jobs feel the same. The environments change, the access changes, the hazards change, but the basics stay the same: know what you’re looking at, do the job properly, and leave the client with inspection results they can trust.

We’re ready for it all! Proud of the AIS team for being able to adapt across such a wide range of sites and sectors. 🔍

The inspection might only take a few hours on site, but the report can be used for months or years afterwards.

That report might be read by the client, an engineer, an auditor, a planner, another inspection company, or somebody dealing with an issue long after the original job is finished.

So it needs to be clear without the inspector standing beside it explaining what they meant.

What was inspected. Which method was used. What equipment was used. What standard applied. What was found. What was not found. Which photos relate to which areas. Whether the item was accepted, rejected, or needs further action.

Good reporting is not admin for the sake of it. It is part of the inspection. And all delivered in a timely manner! 🔍
