Another transformation completed in Newton Mearns, Glasgow by JD Stonemasonry Ltd & Select MS Ltd.

We carefully removed the existing roughcast to prepare the surface for the installation of this veneer stone system, giving the property a completely new look and a much more natural stone finish.

A great example of how the right preparation is key to achieving a clean, high-quality result.

JD Stonemasonry removed and disposed of the original eroded stone steps, which had extensive cracking, failed arrises and surface breakdown creating an uneven and unsafe access. The staircase was then fully refurbished and re-faced using new riven natural stone slabs to treads and landings, with neatly dressed risers and consistent levels throughout. All slabs were set solid and finished with clean, even joints to provide a durable, slip-resistant and greatly improved entrance.

JD Stonemasonry Ltd recently carried out restoration works to this 1700s property in Stewarton. The project involved the careful removal of the cement render that had been applied in previous years, which was preventing the stone from breathing and causing deterioration. Once exposed, the stonework was thoroughly cleaned of stabiliser before being repointed using traditional lime mortar, ensuring the building remains both structurally sound and historically authentic while allowing the stone to perform as originally intended.

Why Summer is Perfect for Exterior Stone Repairs ☀️🔨
Summer sun might feel like holiday time—but for your home’s exterior, it’s repair season.

Here’s why:
🧱 Dry weather means better mortar curing
🧱 Less moisture in walls = more stable surfaces
🧱 Repairs can be completed faster with fewer weather delays

If your property has:

Cracks in steps or boundary walls

Missing pointing or flaking stone

Loose chimney pots or shifting parapets

…it’s far better to sort it now than wait for autumn storms.

We’re happy to inspect and advise—no pressure, just honest expertise.

Cement vs Lime Mortar – What’s the Difference (and Why It Matters) ⚠️
Think mortar is just “the stuff between the stones”? Not quite.

Here’s why using cement mortar on older buildings can do more harm than good:

🧱 Cement is hard, but brittle. It traps moisture.
🧱 Lime is softer and breathable. It moves with the stone and lets walls breathe.

If you’ve got an older sandstone property, cement can crack your stone from the inside out—especially when water freezes and expands.

We only use lime-based mortars on heritage homes—and we’ll always advise the right mix for your property.

Protect your stone. Preserve its future.

What Makes Glasgow’s Tenements So Resilient? 🏘️

There’s a reason so many of Glasgow’s sandstone tenements are still standing strong after 100+ years.

They were built:
🔹 With breathable materials (lime mortar + sandstone)
🔹 To shed water efficiently
🔹 With detailing that let the walls move naturally over time

But here’s the catch: modern materials don’t always play nicely with old stone.

If you've got cement patches, hard sealants or mismatched repairs—they might be undermining the strength of the original build.

We specialise in conservation-friendly repairs that work with the building—not against it. Want a second opinion on your stonework?

Stone Cleaning Myths: Why Pressure Washing Can Ruin Sandstone 💦❌

That pressure washer in the garage? Great for the car—not your stone walls.

Sandstone is porous and layered. Blast it too hard, and you:

- Strip away the surface

- Shorten the life of your wall or steps

- Shorten the life of your wall or steps

It might look “clean” after blasting, but within months, damage shows—and once that top layer’s gone, you can’t get it back.

We use gentle, appropriate methods to clean and preserve. Restore, not ruin.

Why Spring Is the Best Time for Lime Pointing Work 🌿🧱

Lime mortar might seem like old-fashioned stuff—but for traditional stone buildings, it's absolutely essential.

So when’s the best time to get lime pointing done? Right now.

🌤 Spring offers the perfect balance of conditions:

Not too cold (so the lime sets properly)

Not too hot (which can dry it out too fast)

Ground's stable, and walls are drying out from winter

If your pointing is crumbling or patchy, don’t leave it until summer storms or next winter’s freeze do more damage. A small repair now can prevent full wall restoration later.

Crack in the Stone or the Mortar? Here’s What to Look For 👀

Not all cracks are created equal—and knowing the difference can save you stress (and money).

🔸 Crack in the mortar only? Usually weathering. Often easy to repoint.

🔸 Crack through the stone? Could mean structural stress or water damage. Needs a closer look.

🔸 Cracks near chimney stacks or high corners? Might be related to movement or roof pressure.

If you’re unsure—send us a photo. We’ll let you know if it’s worth inspecting further, or nothing to worry about.

📸 Snap, send, and we’ll advise honestly.
