Been a busy few nights in the workshop. With guys gearing up for summer work. We’ve had a lot of bigger saws and hedge trimmers in.

The usual issues with carbs going stale or springs and switches ceasing. All tools are checked thoroughly using diagnostic tools to identify issues prior to stripping down and leave the shop as close to factory settings as can be achieved to ensure long term usage after repair.

Tonight we worked through a rebuild from a saw in parts to identify which parts could be reused and opened up a long reach trimmer to discover the timing valves were misaligned and so tomorrow it’s ordering bits and putting things back together for further testing.

Numerous saws on the bench just now.

This is the most recent. An 880 which is the slightly older edition of Stihl 881 the biggest production saw that’s on the market.

This ones had issues with sticking on at high revs but sporadically so running a number of tests before we open anything up.

- Compression test
- Leak and Vaccum test
- Timer coil test
- Fuel system and air vaccum test

We’ve recently invested in a number of tools to ensure all saws and engines coming in get a battery of tests to help diagnose problems both quicker and more accurately for both getting saws off the bench quicker but in a condition that insures their long term health.

Two jobs on the bench tonight.

Both Huksys which has running issues.

First one wasn’t oiling so out with the back cover, the sprocket, the clutch and the oil pump. Cleaned lubricated and re installed. Run up and oiling again!

Second a 560xpg. The air filter had a hole so the carb had sucked in a monumental amount of dust. The carbs been off the saw, cleaned out checked for scoring and snags and reinstalled. New air filter on route. The side cover also wasn’t fitting correctly so we re threaded the side bolts and made sure they were straight and all other fitting components checked. Back up and running!

Don’t forget for any small engine needs or requirements we are able to accommodate most.

New rebreather, fuel bubble and a carb rebuild and clean on this wee 151 top handle.

Runs like new now and most importantly for the safety of the operator the chain brake which had a ni**le has also been repaired and the stop function on the switch has been put back in service 👍

Another saw ready to leave the shop 🥰

Welding project tonight. A chainsaw holder for the vice welded up for the next saws to visit the bench so that we can hold them steady for the more intricate work. What else do you do with an old chainsaw bar!

The tiniest little part can throw off the whole works. This 545 has a burst diaphragm in the fuel primer bubble meaning inconsistent or no flow to the fuel jet.

Ordered a new one and saw will be up and running by end of play this week.

3 saws in from one customer for the weekend shift.

Two top handles already diagnosed and parts on the way.

A Husqvarna T540 which wasn’t firing right. After a strip down we discovered the timer was loose and the spark plug was chocked. A clean and test run showed and odd vibration which led us to notice a missing clutch spring!

A stihl 201T which had a cracked exhaust and is so gummed up it won’t even start so when a new exhaust is fitted and the saw has had a service clean testing should highlight any further issues but we believe a carb tune should see it up and running.

Finally a Husqvarna 545. Won’t even fire and it’s been sat for a while. On opening up we’ve discovered the carb electronics were not connected and the carb won’t draw fuel so probably has a bad diaphragm. Investigations continue!

Next saw on the bench a Stihl 500i A person we work with a lot has a saw which has been broken in a number of places. One of the places is the engine casing which 1. Is a nightmare to source and 2. Is expensive to replace.

Our plan is to fix the casing with some magic and then replace any other minor parts to get the saw back into service.
