What may appear to be a straightforward task on the surface often involves a significant level of planning, expertise, and safety consideration behind the scenes.
The Industrial Group team were recently tasked with removing two top covers from centrifuge plants where there was a potential presence of hydrogen sulphide (H₂S).
Given the risks associated with this environment, our team carried out a detailed site survey and developed task-specific Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS) to ensure the work could be completed safely and efficiently.
Both covers were carefully removed and landed onto a designated load-bearing floor. Our team then carried out a wash-down of the internal plant components using fresh water, while continuously monitoring H₂S levels throughout the operation.
Following constant monitoring and testing, we could confirm no hydrogen sulphide was present during the task.
This activity required a highly competent team of mechanical engineers, all trained and certified in:
• H₂S Awareness & Safety
• Permit to Work (PTW) systems
• Banksman / Slinger-Signaller operations
• Manual Handling
• Correct PPE & RPE selection
• Breathing Apparatus (BA) operations
• Gas detection equipment
• Overhead gantry crane operations
• Emergency Response Team coordination (ERT)
• Site-specific safety procedures
Safety is never assumed, it is planned, assessed and executed with the right people, training and controls in place.
A great example of how even routine-looking tasks demand the highest professional standards when working in hazardous industrial environments.
