This traditional stone barn had suffered years of water ingress, leading to significant washout of the wall core and loss of structural integrity. Like many older buildings, the issue wasn’t just surface damage — it was trapped moisture and failing past repairs accelerating decay.

Our approach focused on conservation first:

Carefully dismantled and rebuilt the collapsed section using the original stone wherever possible
Reinstated the wall using traditional methods to match the existing fabric
Repointed in breathable lime mortar, allowing moisture to escape naturally and protecting the masonry long-term
Installed new rainwater goods above to properly manage runoff and eliminate the root cause of the damage 💧

This was about respecting the building’s history while ensuring it performs as intended for decades to come. Sympathetic materials. Traditional techniques. Long-term thinking.

Last Thursday we marked an important milestone as we said thank you to Simon Wynn and Tim Carter.

Since joining us in 2017, Simon and Tim have played a key role in developing our Special Works division, known externally as Kilbury Conservation alongside Kilbury Construction. Their expertise in damp proofing, timber treatment, and specialist works on historic buildings has opened up a diverse and valuable workstream for the business.

As they move on to new opportunities, we thank them for their dedication and the strong foundations they leave behind.

We’re also pleased to see the next chapter begin, with Neil Lester and Calum Dean taking the baton forward. With their leadership, the future of this division is in very capable hands.

Great to have an insider’s view of what’s happening to the missing link! It was a real pleasure to be up on Shab Hill with Constructing Excellence marveling at big build programme and fascinating to hear how they’re looking after ecology.

There’s a visitor drop-in centre and a fact for interest: they’re building 7.5 kilometers of drystone walling!
