We apologise for any inconvenience this causes to our clients and hope Jon will be back up on his feet again very soon!
Home not warm?? Tips to help!
This may appear VERY long & boring!! But these tips can keep you warm and save you money!
â ď¸
PLEASE BE AWAREâŚ. You should not remove the casing of your boiler unless you know if it is decorative casing only or integral casing!
Integral casing is not only decorative, but functions as part of the combustion circuit & forms an important seal around the gas carting components ( e,g burner, combustion chamber, gas valve etc) if removing the case requires undoing a number of screws, this usually indicates itâs integral casing and should NOT be removed by anyone other than a gas safe engineer!
â ď¸ IF YOU SMELL GAS CALL - 0800 111 999 (24 hour service)
1. âĄď¸ Check your other gas appliances and electrical sockets & also the trip switch!
You might be in the midst of a power cut, in which case nothing will be working. So if your gas hob and power sockets seem OK, move on to the next check.
2. âŹď¸ Make sure your thermostat is set high enough!
We recommend having your heating set to around 21â. So if yours is lower, increase the temperature on the thermostat to see if that triggers the boiler. If this doesnât work, try putting your heating on full for a little while.
đ Some room thermostats are wireless and will run off batteries! If the batteries are going flat in the thermostat, it canât communicate with the boiler and will not work!!
( In the last 2 weeks, we have had 4 emergency call outs where it was either batteries in the thermostat or the thermostat just wasnât turned up high enough!!)
3. â° Check that your thermostat settings haven't changed due to an accidental knock or power cut. If nothing's changed and the time is set as you expected, it might be time to replace it.
4. âď¸Check your boiler pressure
Make sure the pressure gauge on your boiler control panel reads roughly 1 to 1.5 bar. If it doesnât, carefully use your water valve to adjust the pressure as needed. Please refer to the user manual if you are unsure how to do this.
Bear in mind that you may have to reset your boiler once youâve re-pressurised the system. So if youâre in any doubt about how to do so check your user manual.
đ When the heating/boiler is off - the pressure should be around 1-1.5 bar maximum and will increase once the heating is on!
âď¸ DO NOT over pressurise the boiler! This can cause further issues & damage to your boiler!
5. Check your loft tank if your system is open vented
If youâve got a small plastic or steel tank in your loft it means your boiler system is likely to be open vented, and you may need to check if the float ball valve has got stuck. Only attempt this if itâs safe for you to get to it. You'll find the float ball inside the small plastic or steel tank and youâll see little or no water in there. Very gently, move the float ball valve arm to free it but don't use force. Once youâve done this your water should start to circulate again.
6. Make sure your pipes havenât frozen
If itâs especially chilly outside and your pipes have frozen, you can try thawing them yourself using hot (but not boiling!) water. Or you can apply a hot water bottle or other form of warm compress to the affected pipe. Now give your heating another go.
7. đĽ Check that your pilot light hasnât blown out
If your boiler has a permanent pilot light, youâll need to check your manufacturer's instructions on how check if itâs working, And if you canât get it to light, have an engineer take a look. Any persistent pilot light issues should always be checked by a Gas Safe professional.
8. Try resetting your boiler
Your boilerâs reset button should be located somewhere on the front panel. Check your boiler manual for instructions on how to reset your specific system and see if this gets things going again.
Switch the boiler off and on again
You should find the power switch close to the boiler or in an airing cupboard. Switch it off for a few seconds and then turn it back on again to see if this kickstarts your heating.
9. đŹ Bleeding your radiators
If you find that your radiators are not as warm as they should be, or even if they're ice cold, try bleeding them. You can call a plumber or do it yourself.

And if youâve tried everything and you still have no heating or hot water:
Please refer to the gas safe register to find a local Gas Safe engineer.

â ď¸ Carbon monoxide poisoning!
Carbon monoxide is a poisonous gas that has no smell or taste. Breathing it in can make you unwell, and it can kill if you're exposed to high levels.
Every year there are around 60 deaths from accidental carbon monoxide poisoning in England and Wales.

Gas Safe Register replaced the CORGI registration in 2009. It is the official list of gas engineers who are qualified to work legally on gas appliances.
