Roman Concrete

Roman Concrete Based in Medway, Kent. Roman Concrete is an independent Family run and managed business offering a personal but professional approach to your concrete needs.

Roman Concrete supplies ready mixed concrete via drum mixers or volumetric mixers to both commercial and domestic customers throughout North Kent. As a family run business, we take great pride in our reputation, and work hard to ensure that the service and concrete we offer always meets the very highest of standards. The ability to be flexible with the mix design is one of the main benefits of our

volumetric mixer trucks, having the ingredients mixed onsite reduces the risk of them setting before you’ve laid the concrete, ensuring you always get a fresh mix. The mix can be produced to suit your requirement on site, and altered accordingly due to changes in construction plans, application or weather conditions. Volumetric concrete offers the advantage of only paying for what you need, as the exact amount will be mixed directly at your site. This not only gives you the flexibility to alter the mix as you go, it also means you will never over or under order again.

Concrete Setting Times Change With Temperature (Here's What to Know)

Temperature plays a bigger role in concrete work than most people realise. In warmer summer conditions like we're seeing right now, concrete sets significantly faster, which means your working window shrinks and timing becomes critical. Cold weather does the opposite, slowing the hydration process and leaving fresh pours vulnerable to frost damage before they gain strength. Getting this wrong can compromise the structural integrity of your entire project.

This is exactly why mixing concrete on-site makes such a practical difference. Roman Concrete's volumetric mixer trucks blend ingredients fresh at your location, so you're never fighting against a mix that's already started setting in transit. Whether you're laying footings, a driveway base, or a patio this summer, the pour goes in at the right consistency, at the right time. Have you ever had a concrete pour go wrong because of temperature issues? And are you confident you know your required mix strength before you book your delivery? Drop your questions below or give the team a call, available 24/7 across North Kent. 🏗️

Domestic or Commercial? The Delivery Method Makes All the Difference

Not all concrete projects are the same, and choosing the wrong delivery method can leave you either short on material or paying for a load you didn't need. Volumetric (mix-on-site) is generally the smarter choice for domestic jobs like patios, garden walls, or conservatory bases. You only pay for what's actually mixed, the operator can stop and start on your instruction, and you can even switch between different mix designs from the same vehicle. No waste, no excess charges. 🏗️

For larger commercial pours where speed matters, drum mixer deliveries carrying full 8m³ loads offer faster discharge rates to keep your project on schedule. Roman Concrete also combines both methods when your measurements put you in between. Measuring around 18-19m³ but not quite certain? Two drum mixers covering 16m³ followed by a volumetric to top up the remainder gets you exactly what you need, nothing more. Whether it's a small domestic job from 0.5m³ or a large commercial pour of 100m³+, the right setup exists for your project. What type of project are you currently planning, domestic or commercial? Drop it in the comments and we'll point you in the right direction. 👇

Keeping Your Site Clean: Roman Concrete's On-Site Protocol

Concrete is classed as dirty works. That's just the reality of the job, and any supplier who tells you otherwise isn't being straight with you. What matters is having a clear protocol in place before the truck arrives, so your site, your property, and your team stay as protected as possible. Our operators will always do their best to keep the work area as clean as possible during delivery, and they'll assist with clean-up afterwards too.

There are a few things worth knowing ahead of your delivery. Clear access is essential so please ensure the roadside is free from parked vehicles or obstructions before we arrive. If there's any risk of splashes reaching nearby vehicles or property, sheet them over beforehand. It's also worth having a wash-out box ready for excess concrete. On the safety side, wet concrete is a strong alkali, so PPE isn't optional: protective gloves, full-sleeved clothing, safety boots, and eye protection are all essential when handling it. Any skin contact should be washed immediately with soap and cold running water. Our operators won't leave the public highway until they've inspected access and you've signed to accept our delivery terms. Is your site set up and ready for delivery day? What's your go-to prep routine before a concrete pour? 🏗️

Expansion Joints: The Reason Your Concrete Slab Isn't Cracking

Most large concrete slabs don't fail because of bad concrete. They fail because nobody planned for movement. Concrete expands and contracts with temperature changes, and without properly placed expansion joints, that stress has to go somewhere, and it usually goes straight through your slab as a crack. Getting expansion joints right from the start is one of the most cost-effective things you can do on any poured slab project, whether you're laying a driveway, an HGV yard, or agricultural hard-standing. The grade of concrete matters too. For heavy-duty applications like HGV park paving or agricultural yards, a C40 mix (40 Newton/28 day strength) gives you the structural integrity you need, while a C30/PAV1 at 35 Newton is the go-to for driveways, patios, and garages. Pairing the right mix with correctly spaced joints means the slab manages its own stress rather than fighting against it.

Worth knowing: concrete fibres and plasticiser admixtures can work alongside your joint design to further reduce cracking and shrinkage, giving the finished slab a cleaner, more durable result. At Roman Concrete, our volumetric mixers let us pour the exact quantity you need on-site, with no over-ordering, and we can adjust the mix design, including admixtures, right there on the day. Have you ever had a slab crack on you, and do you know whether expansion joints were part of the original plan? Drop your experience in the comments below 👇

Retaining Walls: Are You Using the Right Concrete Strength?

Get the concrete grade wrong on a retaining wall and you're looking at cracking, movement, or full structural failure down the line. It's one of those decisions that really does matter from the start.

For most domestic retaining walls, a C25 (ST2) mix at 20 Newton/28-day strength is a solid baseline, handling trench fill, pad foundations, and general groundworks in non-aggressive ground conditions. Step up to a C35 (PAV2) at 30 Newton for anything heavier duty or where the wall is bearing significant lateral load from soil or landscaping. For large-scale retaining structures, footings, or anything near HGV traffic or commercial-grade loading, C40 at 35 Newton is the grade built for that kind of pressure. What many people don't realise is that the reinforcement spec matters just as much as the concrete grade itself. Are you reinforcing your retaining wall, or going unreinforced? That single factor changes everything about which mix you should be ordering. 💪

At Roman Concrete, we mix on-site using volumetric mixers, so you only pay for exactly what you use. No part-load charges, no waste, and we're available 24/7 for time-sensitive pours across North Kent, Gravesend, Dartford, Rochester, Maidstone and the surrounding areas. Drop your project details in the comments or give us a call to talk through the right spec for your wall. 🏗️

Why a 7.5 Tonne Line Pump Is Perfect for Tight Residential Jobs

Trying to get concrete to the back of a property without wrecking the garden or burning through labour costs? That's exactly where Roman Concrete's compact 7.5 tonne line pump earns its keep. At just 6 metres long, it parks neatly outside a residential property and runs up to 30 metres of pipeline (extendable to 60m on request) down the side of a house, straight to rear extensions, shed bases, summerhouses, and more. No wheelbarrows. No dumpers. No unnecessary graft.

It's the ideal solution for smaller pours (typically 4 loads and under), and pairs brilliantly with our volumetric on-site mixes so you only pay for exactly what you use. 🏗️ What would have taken a crew hours of manual work gets placed cleanly and efficiently, saving you real money on time and labour. Have you got a garden project or rear extension coming up this summer where access has been a headache? Or perhaps you've used a line pump before and want to share how it went? How to Calculate Cubic Metres for Irregular Shapes

Getting your concrete measurements wrong can cost you real money, especially if you're ordering pre-mixed and can't send any back. Whether you're working with a circular slab, a round column footing, or a tube, the shape of your project changes how you calculate the volume entirely.

For slabs, square footings, or walls, you need length x width x thickness. Round footings or columns require the diameter and depth. If you're dealing with a circular slab or tube, you'll need both the outer diameter, inner diameter, and the length or height. Not sure where to start? Roman Concrete's online calculator handles all three shape types and gives you an instant cubic metre estimate. 💡 And here's something worth knowing: if your measurements aren't quite spot-on, you can combine a drum mixer delivery (in full 8m³ loads) with a volumetric mixer for the remainder, so you only pay for exactly what gets poured, with zero waste. What shape or project are you currently calculating for? Drop it in the comments and we'll point you in the right direction.

Highway Maintenance Can't Wait. Neither Should Your Concrete. 🚧

When a road crew is working against the clock on a motorway or highway maintenance job, every minute of downtime costs money. Rapid discharge rates aren't a luxury on these projects, they're a necessity. That's where pre-mixed drum delivery gives commercial teams a real edge. Roman Concrete's drum mixers arrive on site ready to go, discharging your concrete faster than a volumetric mixer can, which is exactly what you need when you're managing tight windows on live highway works.

For larger pours on road, civil, and infrastructure projects, Roman Concrete also combines both delivery methods to give you speed and precision together. Need 18m³ but not 100% certain of your exact figure? Two drum mixers covering 16m³, followed by a volumetric unit to top up the remainder with zero waste, means you keep the job moving without over-ordering. Available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and backed by trained, qualified tradesmen who understand the demands of civil infrastructure work. What's the biggest challenge your crew faces when scheduling concrete delivery on time-sensitive highway jobs? Drop your answer below.

Civil Engineering Projects Need Reliable Concrete. Here's How We Help.

When you're managing a civil engineering project, whether it's highway maintenance, rail works, or large-scale groundworks, concrete supply isn't just a logistics issue. It's a critical part of keeping your programme on track.

At Roman Concrete, we supply commercial-grade concrete across North Kent 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, because we know civil projects don't always run on a 9-to-5 schedule. Our drum mixers carry full 8m³ loads for rapid discharge, making them ideal for high-volume pours where speed matters. And when your quantities aren't exact, we can combine drum mixers with our volumetric fleet so you only pay for what's actually used, zero waste, zero over-ordering. Beyond delivery, we can tailor the mix itself. RC mixes for strength and durability, pump mixes for tighter access points, waterproof mixes, ST mixes for kerbing and more, with admixtures like plasticiser or retarder available depending on your specification. What mix type does your current project call for, or have you ever been caught short (or over-ordered) on a large pour? 👷

Conservatory Foundations: Don't Let Your Glass Room Sink

A conservatory is one of the most rewarding home upgrades you can make, but without a properly specified concrete base beneath it, that glass structure can shift, crack, and become a costly problem fast. 🏗️

Getting the foundation right starts with choosing the correct concrete grade. For most conservatory bases, C25 (ST2) mix at 20 Newton strength is the go-to choice, offering the versatility and reliability needed for reinforced domestic bases. If your conservatory sits on trickier ground or is a larger structure, a stronger grade may be needed. Roman Concrete mixes on-site using volumetric mixers, which means the concrete is freshly batched to your exact specification on the day, and you only pay for what's actually used. No over-ordering, no waste, no awkward part-load charges. Have you ever been stung by unused ready-mix concrete you still had to pay for?

Roman Concrete serves homeowners and builders across North Kent, including Gravesend, Dartford, Rochester, and Maidstone, with same or next day delivery available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Whether your conservatory project is 0.5m³ or considerably more, the team can advise on the right mix design before a single wheel turns. What's your conservatory project looking like this spring? Drop your questions below and we'll point you in the right direction. 👇
