Brief your concrete supplier properly before delivery day

Over-ordering premixed concrete is the costliest mistake we see, because a drum load can't be sent back once it's batched.

Drum mixers only deliver full 8m3 loads, and the mix can't be changed afterwards. They suit you if you've measured accurately or need a lot poured in a day.

Not sure of your figure? Say your area comes to 18 or 19m3. Order two drum loads for 16m3, then have a volumetric truck mix the last 3, 4 or 5m3 on site. You pay only for what's mixed, so there's no waste.

Also make sure the truck can get to you. Clear any parked vehicles from the roadside, and sheet over anything that could get splashed.

Concrete for Kent Sound Barrier Walls: Get the Spec Right

Sound barrier walls along a Kent roadside need concrete that's strong enough to carry the load and clean enough in finish to look right for decades.

For heavy-duty and structural work, C35 / PAV2 is the mix to look at. It's rated at 30 Newton at 28 days and built for commercial and industrial use. For the footings, a Gen mix or footing mix designed for groundwork trenches does the job.

Finish matters too. Plasticiser softens the mix so it's easier to work, and it cuts bleed and cracking. That makes for a better surface on exposed faces.

We mix on site, so the mix can be altered for changes in plans, application or weather. You only pay for what you use, so you never over or under order.

The truck mixes and discharges at 1m³ per minute. For scale, 1m³ is over 2 tonnes of material, which is a lot to shift by hand when the job has moved on.

Need it late? We're available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with same or next day delivery. And if a direct pour won't reach, ask about pump options when you book.

Line Pumps for Tight Sites With No Room to Spare

Can't get a big pump truck near your job? A line pump is built for exactly that.

It's a compact 7.5 tonne machine, only 6 m long, so it can park out front and run 30 linear metres of pipe as standard. Need more reach? We can add pipe up to 60m, so tell us the distance when you book and we'll load the right kit.

That makes it ideal for a rear extension, shed base or summerhouse, where the pipe runs down the side of the house. It's far quicker and less labour than wheelbarrows or dumpers, and it pairs well with volumetric mixes for jobs of around 4 loads or under.

Driveway concrete and yard concrete aren't the same mix

Ordering concrete for a driveway and ordering for a commercial yard are two different jobs, and the strength you need changes the price and the performance.

A domestic driveway or garage base typically uses C20/Gen 3, rated at 20 Newton/28 day strength. It's built for car weight and everyday wear, nothing heavier.

A commercial yard, especially one taking HGV traffic, needs C40. That's 40 Newton strength, the same grade used for septic tank foundations and agricultural yard paving. Get this wrong and you're looking at cracking or surface failure within a few years.

Patios and garden paths sit lower still, around 15 Newton, since they're not carrying vehicle loads at all.

If you're ordering for a smaller domestic job, volumetric mixing on site means you only pay for what's batched, no waste. Larger commercial pours usually suit drum delivery for faster discharge.

Getting a decent exposed aggregate finish starts with the mix

Want that exposed aggregate look on a driveway or patio? It starts long before anyone picks up a float or a brush.

The mix itself needs thinking through. A PAV mix with air entrainment gives you small, evenly spaced air bubbles through the concrete, which matters more than people expect once winter sets in. Those bubbles give the water somewhere to go when it freezes, so the surface doesn't blow apart after a few freeze-thaw cycles.

Admixtures help too. Plasticiser softens the mix while it's still workable, cuts down on bleed water, and gives a cleaner finish once you expose the stone. Retarder buys you more time before the surface sets, which is exactly what you need when you're washing or brushing back the top layer to reveal the aggregate.

With volumetric mixing, we can adjust any of this on site as conditions change, rather than being locked into whatever turned up in the drum.

Why pump mix matters before the truck arrives

Booking a concrete pump for your extension or driveway? The pipe setup matters more than most people think about until the day itself.

Standard line pumps carry 30 linear metres of pipeline, with more available up to 60 metres if you tell us the distance when you book. Get that wrong on the day and you're stuck waiting while we sort more pipe out.

Pump mixes need extra sand and cement compared to a standard mix, simply because the concrete has to travel through that pipework without separating or blocking it. That's a different recipe to, say, a footing mix for groundwork trenches, so it pays to tell us exactly what the pour is for.

One small thing customers often forget: we need a 20kg bag of standard cement dust on site per 20 metres of pipe, to prime the pipework before pumping starts.

Protecting a fresh concrete slab from an overnight frost

Cold snaps in October and November catch a lot of people out, especially when a slab's gone down late in the day and temperatures drop fast after dark.

Fresh concrete needs to cure above freezing for at least the first 24 to 48 hours. If ice crystals form in the mix before it's hardened properly, you get a weak, crumbly surface that never fully recovers.

A few things that actually help:

Cover the slab with insulated blankets or straw as soon as it's finished, not the next morning.
Avoid pouring late in the afternoon when frost is forecast, as the concrete won't have enough daylight hours to gain strength first.
Ask about an air-entrained mix like our PAV 1 or PAV 2 for outdoor paving. The tiny air bubbles give the water room to expand and contract, which protects the surface through freeze-thaw cycles for years to come, not just overnight.
