Engineering Safety Improvements for Wind Turbine Hub Hatches

Blackrow Group was approached by one of our clients to support with a safety issue identified on wind turbine sites around the world.

The issue related to hub hatch doors positioned between the nacelle and blade hub. Due to their exposed location, these hatches are subject to harsh environmental conditions, vibration, operational wear, and weather exposure.

Our team investigated the root causes and developed a redesigned solution focused on improving safety, durability, and reliability in real operating conditions.

The project included improvements to:

• Outer seal performance using high-grade silicone rubber
• Locking handle security using 316 stainless steel components
• Locking tab engagement within the hub groove
• Visual lock indicators to confirm correct engagement
• Testing procedures to support safe use on site
• Grab handle design following real-world trial feedback

Several redesigned hub hatches have since been manufactured and placed on turbine trials across both the East Coast and West Coast of England, allowing further development based on live operating conditions.

The hub hatch work has covered a range of turbine models, including:

• SWT-2.3-82 VS
• SWT-2.3-93
• SWT-2.3-101
• SWT-3.6-107
• SWT-3.6-120

This project is a strong example of Blackrow’s practical engineering approach.

What you’ll be doing

• Developing software and control solutions for industrial systems
• Carrying out site surveys and identifying project requirements
• Working closely with our Electrical Department, project teams, and clients
• Supporting projects from concept through to commissioning and handover
• Preparing documentation and ensuring systems are delivered to a high standard

What we’re looking for

• Strong understanding of electrical and control principles
• Experience with automation software and CAD systems
• SCADA experience would be advantageous

Here are a few pictures from a recent site demobilisation in Germany, where our Mechanical & Electrical teams, alongside our Thermal Insulation specialists, are now finishing up works on a major project.

The project began with fabrication works carried out in our workshops, followed by installation and on-site support delivered by our teams in Germany.

From fabrication and installation through to final demobilisation, projects like this highlight the importance of coordination, safety, and experienced teams working together to deliver efficiently on site.

This is an important role within the business, supporting our supervisors, employees, and contractors to ensure work is delivered safely across both operational sites and client projects.

Working closely with our Health & Safety Manager, you will play a key role in driving continuous improvement and supporting our commitment to:

What the role involves

• Providing operational H&S support and guidance across projects and workshops
• Supporting supervisors and site teams to maintain high safety standards
• Assisting with investigations and continuous improvement activities
• Promoting compliance across engineering and food industry environments
• Helping drive our Zero Harm culture throughout the business

What we’re looking for

• Strong working knowledge of UK Health & Safety legislation
• Experience and understanding of CDM Regulations 2015
• Previous experience within an H&S role
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively
• Strong communication and organisational skills
• NEBOSH qualification essential (Diploma desirable or willingness to work towards)
• Experience within engineering, manufacturing, or food industry environments advantageous

Last night, we had the privilege of attending the Northern Lincolnshire Business Awards 2026, now in its 25th year and recognised as the largest business event in the region.

We are incredibly proud to share that Blackrow Group was awarded the North East Lincolnshire Business Development Award.

To be shortlisted alongside respected local businesses such as Pattesons Glass Ltd and Laser Red was already an achievement in itself, so to come away as winners means a huge amount to everyone across the business.

This award recognises companies that have contributed positively to the local economy through investment, sustainability, community engagement, and supporting local employment and supply chains.

For us, this reflects exactly what Blackrow Group has always believed in.
