Beneath This Car Park Lies the UK’s Deepest Geothermal Ground Source Boreholes.
At first glance, this looks like an ordinary car park at Scunthorpe General Hospital.
But beneath that manhole cover is something extraordinary.
550 metres below the surface sits an 8-inch diameter geothermal well, home to the UK's deepest and first multi-loop geothermal system using CeraPhi Energy system. Together with an external energy centre, this system is delivering around 60kW of renewable thermal energy to support heating and hot water services across several hospital buildings.
What makes this project remarkable is not what you can see, but what you can't.
While patients, staff and visitors go about their day, the earth beneath their feet is quietly providing reliable, low-carbon energy 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Projects like this demonstrate how existing infrastructure can be transformed into sustainable energy assets, helping critical facilities such as hospitals reduce carbon emissions, improve energy resilience, and lower long-term operating costs.
The energy transition isn't always visible. Sometimes it's hidden beneath a simple manhole cover in a hospital car park.
And that's exactly where the future of heating may be found.
