10 Tips to help keep your bedroom cool during a heatwave without breaking the bank:
1. Donāt rush to open the window - If the air outside is hotter than inside, keeping windows shut can actually help keep your room cooler.
2. Create a through-breeze when it is cooler outside - Open windows or doors on opposite sides of your home in the evening or early morning to flush hot air out and pull cooler air in.
3. Block the sun during the day - Keep curtains or blinds closed while the sun is up to reduce heat build-up, especially if youāre out during the day.
4. Switch off hidden heat sources - Laptops, chargers, and lamps all quietly heat up a room. Unplug what you donāt need before bed.
5. Lower humidity if it feels sticky - High humidity makes heat feel worse. A dehumidifier can make the air feel noticeably lighter and more comfortable.
6. Use a fan as your first line of cooling - Fans donāt actually lower temperature, but they move air efficiently and are far cheaper to run than air conditioning.
7. Use a fan strategically (not randomly) - Point a fan towards an open window at night to push hot air out, or circulate air across the room rather than just at yourself.
8. Size and movement matter - A larger oscillating fan will circulate air more effectively across a room than a small fixed one.
9. Avoid adding heat in the evening - Skip long hot showers, ovens, or tumble dryers before bed - they all push room temperature up.
10. Let heat escape from the top of the room - Hot air rises. Opening a high window or vent at night can help release trapped heat faster.
