Yesterday we opened the doors of our Roadways depot to senior engineers and graduates from WSP, together with representatives from National Highways’ asset, pavement and engineering teams, for a practical discussion about how we can build and maintain roads differently.

The agenda and discussions went well beyond simply looking at materials.

• Cold bitumen emulsion based asphalt, including how it already replaces conventional hot or warm AC20 and AC32 base and binder on Strategic Road Network and local authority roads.

• Value engineering with HBM/CBGM to reduce pavement construction depth. On suitable Category A / Strategic Road Network designs, this can mean up to 50% less excavation, fewer construction layers and less material movement, with potential savings of 20–40% in cost and programme and up to 70% in materials-only carbon, depending on the design.

• Recycled unbound aggregates and how locally produced secondary materials should be replacing virgin aggregates.

But perhaps the most important conversations were not about individual products at all.

They were about collaboration and early contractor engagement providing contractors and material specialists with the opportunity to challenge a design before construction starts.

Exploring different contracting models for highways maintenance that reward whole-life value, innovation and better outcomes rather than simply repeating what we have always done.

This is exactly the type of open technical collaboration we would like to see much more of.

Roadways the right way means not simply building what is on the drawing, but working together to ask whether there is a safer, faster, lower-carbon and better-value way to deliver it.

A lot has changed since 1966, but one principle has stayed the same: make good use of what we have, avoid waste and do things properly.

As we continue celebrating 60 years of Roadways, here’s a little look inside our newly refurbished and expanded offices and training facilities at the Hailsham depot. 👀

Wherever we could, we chose to reuse rather than buy new, including second-hand carpet tiles, desks and chairs, and even reclaimed wooden pallets turned into a printer stand.

A small example of the same thinking we apply to the roads we build: use resources intelligently, reduce waste and never compromise on the required quality.

Back-to-school month means busier roads, excited but distracted kids, and disrupted routines.

At Roadways, we are launching a new initiative to help protect our young pedestrians.

We are releasing FREE road safety and roadworks awareness video games designed specifically for preschool and primary school children, including tailored accessibility for children with SEND.

We hope that interactive awareness will help kiddies to understand how to navigate roads, roadworks and hazards safely through play.

A quick reminder for all drivers:
🧡 Slow down near schools, residential streets, and pedestrian crossings.
🧡 Stay extra vigilant during morning drop-offs and afternoon pickups

Sustainable construction has to work on site:

🔸It has to be safe.
🔸It has to be standards-compliant.
🔸It has to reduce risk.
🔸It has to make commercial sense.
🔸And it has to be repeatable.

Our shortlisted schemes on the National Highways SRN with Cold bitumen emulsion based asphalt shows that 40% - 70% lower-carbon road construction is not just a future ambition, it's becoming business as usual and most importantly it ticks all the wishlist above!

Thank you Highways UK! We are very proud to be shortlisted for the Sustainability Award.

This recognition means a great deal because it reflects the practical progress being made in lower-carbon highways delivery.

Congratulations to all the finalists. We look forward to seeing everyone in Birmingham.
