It’s been a busy few weeks with a range of maintenance projects underway across the Halifax area, alongside specialist work on listed buildings and heritage properties.

Here’s one of our latest projects, recently completed in Elland, Halifax. The transformation looks fantastic, and we’re proud of the finished result. What do you think?

Having to work around a sparrow’s nest with a mum and her young chicks didn’t take long at all before they had enough feathers to start flying around the big world.

Mum obviously did a mega job looking after them. It was lovely to see the young sparrows flying around and landing on the scaffolding.

Started on a roofing job and found that some house sparrows
-we think-have made a nest in between the ridge tiles
By the sound of it, they’ve got a few chicks growing in there too. We’re working around them for the time being and giving them as much space as possible. Hopefully, before long, they’ll leave the nest and go on to build nests of their own.”

Outlet Designed
Cast iron guttering plays an important role in the character and authenticity of period and listed buildings.

There’s something special about original cast iron gutters. They’re not just functional—they’re part of a building’s history and character.

While modern systems are often quicker to install, nothing quite matches the look, durability, and authenticity of well-maintained cast iron. With the right care and restoration, these traditional features can last for decades and continue to enhance the appearance of any property.

We specialise in restoring and maintaining cast iron guttering across a range of projects. From careful preparation and rust treatment to high-quality finishing, our focus is on preserving these details properly—not just covering them up.

Trying to repair and “rescue” a heavily weathered chimney stack often isn’t a real option anymore. Once brickwork starts to break down and mortar joints have failed, simple patch repairs like repointing or sealing rarely last. In many cases, they only add to the overall cost over time, as the same issues keep coming back.

A full or partial rebuild might seem like a bigger expense upfront, but it’s usually the more reliable and cost-effective solution in the long run. Taking the stack down to a sound level and rebuilding it properly ensures structural integrity, prevents ongoing water damage, and avoids repeated short-term fixes.

It’s understandable why these problems get overlooked—chimney work can be a significant investment for homeowners. But from experience, you’re almost always better off doing it once and doing it right, rather than continually patching over a failing structure.

If your chimney is showing signs of cracking, loose brickwork, or failing mortar, it may be time to consider a long-term solution rather than another temporary one

We’re often asked: why use lime instead of cement?

The key difference is breathability. Lime mortar is vapour-permeable, allowing moisture to pass through and evaporate naturally, helping to regulate moisture within the building structure

Cement is denser and less permeable. While this makes it suitable for modern construction, it can trap moisture in older buildings, often leading to damp and deterioration.

Applying cement pointing over lime mortar can exacerbate the issue, as it restricts evaporation and can accelerate the breakdown of the lime beneath.

Choosing compatible materials is essential.

Lime pointing is more than just a traditional skill — it’s a vital part of preserving the integrity of older buildings. Over the years, as construction has evolved to meet increasing demand and a growing population, the industry has shifted toward faster methods and modern materials like cement. While these changes have helped build at scale, they’ve come at a cost.

Many older properties were never designed to work with cement. Lime mortar allowed buildings to breathe and move naturally, whereas cement can trap moisture and cause long-term damage. As a result, we’ve seen historic structures suffer simply because the wrong materials were used.

It’s a shame that many of these age-old techniques have been lost or overlooked, but there’s a growing awareness of their importance. Bringing lime work back isn’t about resisting progress — it’s about understanding what works best for the building in front of you.

As tradespeople, it’s important we respect both modern methods and traditional craftsmanship. Using the right materials in the right context ensures these buildings can stand for generations to come.
