The Aqueduct of Segovia is one of the most remarkable and best-preserved ancient Roman engineering marvels left standing in Europe. Located in the heart of Segovia, Spain, this monumental structure was built around the 1st century AD to channel fresh drinking water from the mountain springs of the Sierra de Guadarrama directly into the city.
Engineering FactsThe Mortarless Secret: The aqueduct is constructed from roughly 20,400 to 24,000 blocks of solid Guadarrama granite. Incredibly, the entire structure stands without a single drop of mortar or cement, relying entirely on a precise, ingenious equilibrium of gravity and forces.
While the entire water supply system stretches over 15 kilometres (9 miles) across the landscape, its most iconic, elevated section bridges a deep valley at the Plaza del Azoguejo. Here, it features a striking double-tiered arcade reaching a maximum height of 28.5 metres (94 feet).
