🔧 Key Boiler Stats
1. Up to 60% of annual energy bills in a home can be attributed to the boiler.
2. Older non condensing gas boilers may operate at around 60% efficiency, which means roughly 40% of the fuel is wasted.
3. Modern condensing boilers (installed after the mid 2000s) achieve 92% efficiency or higher, depending on the system design and installation quality.
4. The typical lifespan of a gas boiler in the UK is about 10 to 15 years. With good installation and maintenance, some can last up to 20 years.
5. The use of condensing combination boilers has grown significantly. In 2001, around 28% of homes had a condensing combination boiler. By 2023, this number had risen to around 55%.
✅ What these mean for homeowners
• If your boiler is older than 10 to 15 years, you may be paying more in fuel due to lower efficiency.
• Even if a boiler still works, its efficiency naturally declines with age.
• A high efficiency boiler performs best when matched with the right system design, radiators and controls.
• Choosing the correct output size (kW) is essential. Too large increases running costs. Too small leaves the home underheated.
• Proper installation and regular servicing help maintain efficiency and extend lifespan.
