NOW SOLD - Thank you!

Fully reconditioned RHD 80" aluminium steering box.

This had had the cracked casing repaired in my usual manner with a threaded steel sleeve, then riveted back together as original. No further cracking issues to worry about! The casing on this one is very good indeed with no corrosion at all to speak of - one of the better ones for sure.

It also has:
New bronze nut (5-start worm)
New rocker bushes
New outer column
New cover plates - side and bottom
New fasteners
New top bearing balls
Reground inner and outer top bearing races
Lipped oil seal on rocker shaft

It comes ready to fit with stator tube clamp, rubber seal and gasket on the bottom. I will also fit a new bulkhead seal to the outer column before it leaves here.

Recent machining of a new bronze casting for this LMS driver's brake valve. All manually machined, and aside from the mounting fl**ge and bolt holes (done on the mill) all the boring and overturning was done on the Kearns S-Type and then the threads all done on the Butler lathe (one by one!). I actually installed a DRO on the Kearns half way through this job... I've got a lot of work lined up for that machine over the next few months and it'll speed up the work immeasurably. Lots of setups on this one, especially on the lathe. I then remachined some of the inner components from the old valve body and reassembled before returning it to the customer. Again, lovely (customer supplied) castings and bronze being bronze makes the finished result look nice if I do say so myself. I'd quite happily machine no other material!

Before I set off working on the vacuum ejector castings I got used to the controls of the S-Type on a simple facing job, but on a fairly priceless piece of iron!

This side plate 1.6 engine is from a 1948 Land Rover 80". It has obviously been sat for years with the side plates missing, and the mating faces were deeply pitted so they wanted cleaning up. For the nerds amongst you, the block is stamped with the number 860001. Believed genuine, from a trusted source but who knows for certain. Nice to be trusted to work on it nevertheless.

Boring it out would have been my job too but I really need a proper hone for doing blocks so I declined that bit unfortunately (it's a bit heavy for lifting onto my horizontal Sunnen!).

I'm useless at posting pics from the workshop... I'm still very busy with steering boxes but still trying to keep other work rolling along at the same time, which I sometimes remember to post about!

A new Gresham & Craven SSJ vacuum brake ejector. The first of a small batch, a bit of a voyage of discovery as I believe it's the first one made from these exact patterns so a few small issues which will hopefully be ironed out on subsequent ones, but overall a success and I am told it works very well in testing (phew!)

First 'proper' job carried out on the new-to-me Kearns S-Type which was a joy to use, and will be a very valuable addition to the workshop.

As it will be a small batch I made a series of plug gauges to size all the threads. Very few are BSP so most of them were single point cut on the lathe - lots of clocking up and lots of balance weights!

All manually machined of course. Borer from the 1940s, lathe from the 1960s, operator from the 1990s 😅

SOLD

Fully reconditioned Land Rover 80" RHD aluminium steering box

Outright purchase - was prepared for a customer but their plans changed and so it is now available.

It has had the casing repaired with a steel insert as it did suffer from the usual cracking between the rivets where the tube enters the aluminium casing. It has been riveted back together as original for a near invisible, but strong, repair.

It has had a new bronze nut made to fit both the original worm and rocker arm ball joint, new rocker shaft bushes made fitted and honed to suit, reground top bearing races and new ball bearings, all new fasteners, new side and bottom cover plates, an improved lipped oil seal on the rocker shaft, media blast and repaint and comes ready to fit with stator tube clamp, seal, and gasket on the bottom. If required, a new Charlesworth bulkhead seal can be fitted at an extra £10.95 to save you the hassle!

Priced at £850 + shipping

To go with the simpling valve was this new handbrake screw, also for the Fowler. It had been roughed out by the customer so I had to finish turn up to the collar and then machine the left hand square thread (including the nut of course which I made first) - single start, 1/2" pitch, 1-1/4" dia . The size of the thrust collar was too big to go down the headstock spindle on the lathe unfortunately so I was maxing out the centre distance capacity of the DSG and I had to employ both fixed and travelling steadies to combat the vibration. Manually machined from EN8, thread all cut with ground HSS tooling.

Recent jobs include this little simpling valve for a Fowler. A little trickier than it should have been due to the shape of the casting not being quite right, and it had no cores so just a solid casting. Too much 'green' in some areas, and not enough in others so a bit of head scratching and a few slight changes to the drawing but outwardly looking the same and functioning as it should. The customer is finishing off the handle for the isolator.
All manually machined of course, and again plenty of different setups on this one to get it from raw casting to finished valve.

Another load of steering boxes collected from customers old and new at the Land Rover Series One Club rally this past weekend. With any luck I'll get them done before the next one! Thanks to everyone to came by and chatted.
