Let’s talk aviation ✈

For decades, Kilfrost has supported the aviation industry with high-performance de-icing and anti-icing fluids designed to help keep aircraft operating safely and efficiently in challenging winter conditions.

Our aviation solutions are developed to deliver reliable holdover performance, operational efficiency, and protection against the build-up of snow and ice - all while supporting evolving environmental and regulatory standards.

But aviation is about more than products alone...

It’s about precision, timing, safety, and trust in critical moments on the ground.

That’s why continuous research, testing and innovation remain at the core of what we do.

With the 2026 FIFA World Cup upon us, we wanted to share a football-related story from our archive... ❄

Kilfrost’s early ventures were inspired by the beautiful game.
Joseph Halbert, Kilfrost’s founder, did a series of tests with his pioneering chemical invention, created in Whitley Bay, on frost-bound football fields. Pictured here, in a 1933 newspaper article, he is applying his product with a watering can to West Ham’s frozen ground in preparation for their 1933 cup-tie match with West Bromwich Albion!

The tests were successful and met with approval of many UK football clubs. The formula was also used on Rugby pitches and greyhound racing tracks.

One hundred gallons of the Kilfrost preparation were needed to thaw a hard frost-bound football ground. A team of six applied the liquid, ‘manufactured’ in the players’ dressing room baths. The product was put through severe tests using pieces of pitch turf in cold storage chambers including the Union Cold Storage at Smithfield, London where representatives of the major teams there attended the demonstrations.

Success was achieved but there was a hitch...
The product could change the colour of the pitches to blue! … Blue became Kilfrost’s signature colour.

We don’t expect the pitches at the 23rd World Cup to need deicing, but football is an important part of Kilfrost’s story and we’ll be celebrating the tournament and wishing it success.

Why testimonials matter... ✨

At Kilfrost, long-term relationships are built on more than just our products - they’re built on trust, consistency, and delivering when it matters most.

Feedback from our partners and customers plays an important role in what we do. It reflects the standards we hold ourselves to, and the collaborative approach we value across every project and operation.

A huge thank you to IDS for the kind words and continued partnership and for choosing Clearway.

Inside our lab… ❄

This is where our products begin their journey.

Every Kilfrost solution is carefully developed, tested, and refined to perform in the conditions that matter most - from extreme cold to critical operational environments.

It’s a process built on precision, experience, and a deep understanding of how our fluids perform in the real world.

Because what happens here… makes all the difference out there.

The Antarctic Expedition... ❄

Kilfrost’s historical adventures included supplying products for use and testing on Antarctic expeditions throughout the 1950s - including the British North Greenland Expedition of 1952–54, the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition of 1955–58, and the Norwegian-British-Swedish scientific research expedition to Antarctica between 1949–52!

led by author and polar researcher Norwegian John Schjelderup Glaever whose team included the renowned Canadian geologist and polar explorer Ernest Frederick Roots.

One of the most memorable moments from this chapter in our history came through a letter sent to Kilfrost from Antarctica itself...

From Mr. ‘Fred’ Roots written from their expedition base at Maudheim, Antarctica to thank us for our products and to give us feedback on their efficiency...

It seems that our products stood up pretty well in the harshest conditions across the expedition, especially the Kilfrost Marine Paste, a protective coating and lubricant, which seems to have proved a success in a variety of applications.

In his letter, Mr. Roots tells us about an unusual use of Kilfrost Marine Paste by the team members:-

“The Marine Paste has even been used with some success on beards and moustaches! Perhaps some members might suggest that an improvement in your product would be to supply it in a variety of flavours!”

Today - We wouldn’t recommend using any of our de-icing products on beards or moustaches... in any flavour! But it is stories like this, that allow us to reflect on hour deep rooted herriatge...

A HUGE journey for Kilfrost - and those using our product ❄

Behind the scenes at Kilfrost ❄
An insight into us, and how we operate…

Every solution we deliver starts here - developed, tested, and refined by our team, right here in the UK.

Our laboratory is where decades of knowledge meet modern innovation. It’s where ideas are challenged, performance is proven, and every product is held to the highest standards before it reaches the field.

Because when it comes to safety and reliability, there’s no room for compromise.

We are deep rooted in the wonderful community of the North East of England - Based in Haltwhistle, Northumberland, England - our Kilfrost HQ has enjoyed the same location alongside the banks of the river Tyne since the late 1940s!

We've been creating, manufacturing and sending out our products to the world since making this our home all those decades ago...

Our riverside location is a special place for us but it's also a place shared by the local community which we're proud to be part of. And the natural beauty of the location is an inspiration to everyone.

We're an established specialist in deicing and anti-icing fluids for aviation and rail and we have also developed green solutions for heating and cooling systems from geothermal to industrial refrigeration. The inspiration for Kilfrost was inspired by the humble snowdrop....

Kilfrost has a strong commitment to respect and protection to the environment.

We are proud to be a local employer. Our team of very talented and skilled people include people from both our local community and from much further afield!

We look forward to sharing more from our local patch over the coming weeks...
