Our orbital machining technology allows us to repair and restore crankshafts and main journal bearings 𝙙𝙞𝙧𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙡𝙮 𝙤𝙣𝙨𝙞𝙩𝙚, including aboard sea-going vessels and at offshore locations.

We have a large inventory of portable orbital machining equipment, including orbital turning, grinding, honing and superfinishing tools, which can be shipped or hand-carried to sites around the world.

That means our technicians can carry out precision repairs on land-based sites, sea-going vessels and even offshore oil and gas platforms, restoring journal surfaces to the required OEM standards without the need to remove the crankshaft.

730 mm bore. 1,783 mm face. Five days onsite.

For Kongsberg Marine and Shipping, we carried out a complete steering tube bearing housing repair, including onsite line boring, precision machining and sleeve installation.

The damaged bore was machined to prepare it for a new sleeve, which was then line bored to Ø730 mm with an F7 tolerance and 3.2 Ra surface finish. The horizontal face was also machined, removing only the material needed to restore the damaged surface.

The result was a fully repaired component, completed onsite and without the need to remove and replace the large marine component. 👏

When polishing isn’t enough, a tail shaft may need to be reconditioned.

Where wear on the journal has gone beyond what can be corrected through polishing, controlled machining can restore the shaft’s dimensions and prepare it for a matched bearing.

The shaft can be machined to an approved undersize diameter, with careful control of concentricity and geometry throughout the process. It’s a more involved repair, but one that can 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗮 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗻 𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗹 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗳𝘁 and 𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 without the need for complete shaft replacement. ✅
