on some of the ways in which natural stone compares to alternative products in terms of sustainability.
‘Sustainability is a key consideration when choosing materials for any project. Many people ask us, “How can the use of natural stone enhance my projects’ sustainability credentials?”
Natural stone has many sustainability credentials you may not have considered. Here are a couple that our Company Directors wish to share this week.
The finished product closely resembles the quarried product, and requires little processing post-extraction compared to the fabrication of ceramic tiles. In particular, there are no kilns required to sustain high temperatures, which release large amounts of CO2 and use lots of energy. Our quarries are located close to our factories, reducing the CO2 footprint from transporting materials further. Environmentally, in this regard, natural stone is advantageous over many similar products.
Natural stone lasts longer than a lifetime. Its’ durability is immense, and when treated properly, it will outlast any project. This also gives natural stone a high potential to recycle, from reclaiming and relaying used tiles, to reuse in mosaics, or crushing for use in aggregate. A combination of durability when installed and recycling potential if decommissioned gives natural stone an economic edge over other materials when considering the life cycle of the product.
There are many advantages to using natural stone, from the limitless potential of the colours, textures, and cuts, to the environmental properties discussed above. When considering flooring for your next project, be sustainable and choose natural stone.’
