Your arena plays a huge part in your horse’s comfort, performance and long-term soundness. But how do you know when it needs some TLC?
Here are 4 signs to look out for ➡️

Puddles and persistently wet areas can damage the surface and quickly turn small problems into expensive repairs

If the arena membrane is becoming visible, torn or damaged, it’s a clear sign that the surface needs attention. Left untreated, damaged membrane can affect drainage and footing consistency and may lead to further deterioration of the arena.

Deep and/or dusty arenas can be a sign that the surface is too dry or needs attention to its moisture and maintenance levels

Deep footing can put additional strain on your horse’s tendons and joints

Heavy use can cause the footing to become uneven or compacted, reducing shock absorption and increasing strain on the horse

This arena was due some attention, so we’ve been in to top up the surface and get everything relevelled.

A smooth, even surface isn’t just about how it looks — it’s about creating a better, more consistent surface for both horse and rider.

•All-weather surface- A properly installed equestrian-grade surface can provide a firm, non-slip area during wet winter periods

•Allows daily movement – Horses still have space to walk, stretch and move naturally, which is important for physical and mental wellbeing.

•Protects grazing land – Restricting horses to a smaller winter area prevents the main fields becoming churned up and poached, leaving them in much better condition for spring.

•Re-introducing Turnout after injury - a turn out pen means more controlled movement. A secure pen can provide more movement than a stable without allowing the horse to gallop around a large field.

• Firm footing- This is particularly important after injury. Deep mud or slippery ground can put additional strain on recovering tissues

𝟰 𝗠𝗔𝗜𝗡𝗧𝗘𝗡𝗔𝗡𝗖𝗘 𝗧𝗜𝗣𝗦 𝗙𝗢𝗥 𝗬𝗢𝗨𝗥 𝗔𝗥𝗘𝗡𝗔

1. 𝗗𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀-
It is important to remove droppings from the arena surface as quickly as possible. Droppings and other organic matter, such as fallen leaves, can quickly break down into the footing. This can affect the stability of the surface and cause it to dry out prematurely.

2. 𝗗𝘂𝘀𝘁 & 𝗠𝗼𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲
A well-maintained arena should provide many years of use. However, failing to maintain adequate moisture levels can significantly reduce the lifespan of the base and compromise the quality of your arena surface.
We can fit a leaky-pipe irrigation system to help control moisture levels and keep your arena surface performing at its best.

3. 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗠𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲-
You wouldn’t buy a new car and never take it to the garage for a service — your arena is no different!
Regular maintenance is essential to keep your arena performing at its best and to create the perfect training environment for you and your horse. We can happily assess your arena and advise you on the maintenance it may need.

4. 𝗘𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁-
Different arenas require different tools — they’re definitely not one size fits all! When choosing the right equipment, consider factors such as:

What type of surface do you have?
Is your surface hard-packed or loose?
How frequently is the arena used?

Using the correct equipment will help maintain the surface effectively while avoiding unnecessary damage or disruption to the footing
