Throwback to 13 July 2018, and a night a bit closer to home at the Staincliffe Hotel in Seaton Carew.

The building has had a few lives. It was built in 1869 as Staincliffe House, a family home for the Hartlepool timber merchant Thomas Walker, who used a cupola at the top of the house as his art studio. In 1921 it became a convalescent home for workers from the Gray shipbuilding firm, and in 1929 it was converted into a hotel. It closed as a hotel at the end of 2023.

Kit spotlight: full-spectrum cameras.

A full-spectrum camera picks up infrared and ultraviolet light as well as the light our eyes can see, so we use them for photos and video in dark and low-light areas.

Dust, insects and reflections can look very strange on camera, so we go through all our footage carefully before we read anything into it.

This photo is some of our kit set out on the floor at the Reproduction Centre in Hartlepool, back in March 2025.

Ever wondered how the Ship Isis got its name?

The pub was originally known simply as "The Ship". It's said the name came from the crew of a ship called the Isis, who drank there after being paid off. Another local story says the bar was fitted with timbers from the Isis after she was wrecked off the Sunderland coast. Which one do you believe?

Come and spend the night there with us on Saturday 20 March 2027, from 11pm until 3am. It's a Grade II-listed Victorian pub on Silksworth Row in Sunderland, built in 1885, and you'll have full use of all our equipment.

Not the cosiest corner of the museum.

This bone cabinet and horror-film puppet were at the Haunted Objects Museum in Rotherham, where we spent the night on 5 September 2025.
