Delta T: the small reading that tells you a lot about a UFH system

In underfloor heating, Delta T is more than a number on a display.

It can help installers and specifiers understand whether a system is moving water correctly, transferring heat properly, and performing as the design intended.

Too high? You may be looking at restricted flow, trapped air, incorrect balancing or a loop that is not moving enough water.

Too low? It could be excessive flow, low demand, an open bypass, or simply a heat-pump-led system designed to run with a smaller temperature difference.

The important bit: don’t chase Delta T in isolation.
✅ Check the design.
✅ Check the heat source.
✅ Check whether the system is at steady state.
Then use the reading to confirm what the system is telling you.

We’ve put together a practical guide covering Delta T targets, common issues, commissioning checks and system balancing.

Most UFH compliance issues don't show up on the drawing. They show up after the screed has gone off, when there's nothing cheap left to fix.

We've pulled together the six Part L clauses that cause the most site queries on UK dwellings - with paragraph references, a model spec clause, and a short coordination checklist for trades.

A few that get missed most often:
1️⃣ The 1.25m² K/W rule for UFH over unheated rooms - easy to lose when layouts get copied between house types
2️⃣ Different intermediate floor values for electric (0.5m² K/W) and wet (0.75m² K/W) systems
3️⃣ The 65mm screed setback rule, which sits in the UFH section rather than the main controls section
4️⃣ Why generic “to comply with Part L” wording in a spec does nothing to stop the detail being downgraded on site

Worth a read if you're specifying UFH or signing off Part L packages on housebuilding schemes - https://eu1.hubs.ly/H0vjFcD0

Three things about underfloor heating that still come up in design meetings - all three are outdated:

1️⃣ “It’s too slow to respond.”
Based on old, deep‑screed systems - not modern thin‑build or plate UFH.

2️⃣ “You need a 35 °C flow temp with a heat pump.”
Flow temperature is a result of emitter design, not a starting assumption.

3️⃣ “One zone per floor is fine.”
One of the most common causes of comfort complaints after handover.

We’ve put together a short, standards‑led article tackling eight common UFH myths - overheating, floor finishes, retrofit build‑ups, response times, flow temps, zoning, and more.

Practical. Evidence‑based. No fluff.
For installers and specifiers who’d rather reference BS EN 1264 than repeat hearsay.

Last Tuesday, the Ambiente team swapped screens for spatulas for our end‑of‑year celebration at Tewinbury Farm Hotel

Part of the day was spent at the cookery school, getting hands‑on in the kitchen and enjoying a different kind of teamwork away from the usual day to day. It was a great opportunity to unwind, connect, and reflect on the year we’ve had together in a brilliant setting.👨🏻‍🍳🌿

Days like these are all about celebrating the people behind the business, and this one was a well‑earned reward for an amazing team. Thanks to everyone who helped make it such a memorable day! 👏🎉

Value engineering should not mean value-engineering comfort.

Too many conversations about low-temperature heating start with product cost. They should start earlier - with design decisions. Because what gets specified at the outset has a huge impact on performance, delivery, and homeowner experience later on.

We’ve written a short playbook for housebuilders setting out a practical four-move strategy:
1️⃣ Start with fabric to reduce heat loads
2️⃣ Standardise UFH details across house types
3️⃣ Specify controls homeowners actually understand
4️⃣Build commissioning and QA into the product, not the snagging list

The aim is simple: support FHS/HEM goals, improve consistency on site, and reduce post-handover problems.
As the market moves towards heat pumps and low-flow-temperature systems, getting this right now matters.

🚨 New Project Showcase: St Peters Chase, Thurston 🚨

We're excited to highlight our work on the St Peters Chase development – delivering a fully designed, energy efficient underfloor heating solution across a mix of new build homes.

By the time underfloor heating was added to the specification, several plots were already at DPC/oversite stage – creating immediate programme pressure. Our team responded quickly with technical design support, rapid product supply, and close coordination with WMS Underfloor Heating, the appointed installer.

✅ Two sub-floor constructions managed - using AmbiTak and AmbiCastellated systems to ensure the perfect fit
✅ Designed for low temperature efficiency alongside air source heat pumps
✅ Plot by plot design support to optimise pipe spacing, circuit lengths, and flow temperatures
✅ Protected slab pour dates through rapid technical turnaround

This project is a great example of how flexible system selection + responsive technical design = a smooth installation and an efficient, future ready heating solution.

🎥 Watch the installation in action in the video above.

If you’d like support on your next residential development, our team is always here to help.

The Future Homes Standard was confirmed on 24th March. From 2028, new homes in England will need low-carbon heating - and for most, that means heat pumps.

So, one question suddenly matters a lot more: what heat emitter are you designing around?

If you put UFH downstairs but radiators upstairs, the whole system can end up running hotter than it needs to. That drags down heat pump efficiency and pushes up running costs for the people living there.

We’ve written about why wet UFH is starting to look less like a premium extra and more like the sensible new-build default, and whether whole-house UFH is now practical upstairs too.
