Net&Me Bootstrap We aim to initiate change designed to reduce the harmful effects of digitalization on mental health

BootStRaP - it's a project name: Boosting Societal Adaptation and Mental Health in a Rapidly Digitalizing,
Post-Pandemic Europe. We bring together a multidisciplinary consortium aiming to initiate health and social policy and practice change designed to reduce the harmful effects of digitalization on mental health, particularly for young people. BootStRaP will provide unprecedented scientific know

ledge on the psychological mechanisms underlying (risk for) PUI and potential interventions. Improved self-management and tools to optimize healthy internet usage will promote mental health prevent mental ill health in adolescents, and contribute to reducing stigma. In addition, our policy toolkit will empower policymakers and private companies to self-regulate with the intent to protect vulnerable groups. In the long run, Bootstrap will thus contribute to improving mental well-being across Europe and beyond.

We are delighted to share that the BootStRaP project has been featured on BBC One's Show!

This is an important for the project, bringing an international research initiative into the public spotlight and opening up a wider conversation about young people’s digital wellbeing.

In the programme, the project is presented by its coordinator, Prof. A. Fineberg, alongside contributions from young participants sharing their lived experiences.

Just now, Sofia Venturini (University of Hertfordshire) presented the Net&Me Bootstrap project’s communication and dissemination strategies at the 7th Mental Health Dialogues!

This session brought together perspectives from seven Horizon Europe-funded projects to explore how academic outputs can be effectively shared with non-academic audiences to create meaningful, real-world impact.

Our panellist from Sister Project , Rainer Mere, is a psychologist at Health Clinic and a project manager at , specialising in well‑being and mental health. He brings extensive experience in developing and managing worksite programmes, supporting both executives and employees through evidence‑based coaching and tailored well‑being strategies.

He also serves as the tool implementation coordinator within the European project ‑Best, helping expand access to digital mental health resources across Europe. Alongside his project work, he is a guest lecturer at Tallinn University and an active member of the Union of Estonian School Psychologists, contributing to the advancement of mental health practice and education.

Our panellist from sister project , Taylor is a Professor in the School of Psychology at University College . Her research is framed by an intergroup developmental approach to study and processes for youth in settings of protracted conflict.
Her work has implications for child , such as aggression, prosocial behaviours and social identity, as well as broader psychosocial processes, such as shared education and intergroup relations, which may fuel or constrain conflict.

Toward this end, she studies how and why violence affects behaviours and attitudes related to conflict , primarily during childhood and adolescence.

How can we help young people their emotions in the digital age?

Our colleague in the Net&Me Bootstrap project, Pim Widdershoven, in an interview with a Dutch science media outlet, shares insights from our work, highlighting how social media are used by young people to regulate and avoid difficult emotions.

Net&Me Bootstrap now involves around 2,500 adolescents across Europe, including participants from five schools in the . An important part of Net&Me Bootstrap work is the development of an app designed to support emotional regulation, co-created with young people.

“The idea is that we help young people regulate their emotions in a different way. We want to compete with the smartphone as an emotion regulator.”
