Cheshire Living are extremely concerned that the Local Authorities and Central Government - who for years have positioned environmental concerns and climate change agreements way ahead of fire safety - within domestic and commercial buildings, continue to do so without any regard to recent events.
For over 20 years, building contractors have been instructed to install solid insulation panels, from suppliers such as Celotex and Kingspan, which as most in the trade know are not fire proof, as we must comply with National Building Regulations on insulation values within new and extended buildings or these new buildings, extensions and conversions will not meet current standards and will not be passed.
Something is very wrong, this issue on flammability has long been surpressed, however Grenfell, for all the tragedy endured by those involved - actually made mainstream media highlight the issue - although cloaked in mid reporting and ‘cladding’ building terminology.
Now we all must stand up to the Local and Central Authorities and refuse these dangerous products from being enforced via Councils for use in residential and commercial buildings. Homes, schools, hospitals and offices are all at risk.
There appears to be a hypocritical approach to fire safety within the building regulations.
For instance a domestic loft conversion has to meet regulations - which include means of escape via a suitable (roof) window, 1 hour fire protected stairwells, upgrading all habitable doors to the property to fire rated or alternatively increasing doorstop rebates to 25mm and painting insides of door and reveals in 3 costs of intumescent paint, whilst at the same time filling every inch of the loft conversion with flammable solid insulation - as it reduces energy consumption and is good for the planet at large?!.
This is ludicrous and requires immediate investigation, standardisation and ground up reform.
Unless a united stand is taken - this issue will be diluted by spin and nothing will ever change.
What is harder to comprehend is that there are extremely effective alternative fire retardant insulation products available, which perform equally, if not better than solid insulation.
These products, such as TriISO multi-foil blanket, have been produced for years, which the UK Authorities refuse to allow under the current building regulations. The reasons for this remains somewhat ill defined and unclear.
So the reality is that it is certainly possible to insulate well whilst also ensuring excellent fire safety within our new and existing buildings.
Other countries DO allow these alternate products. We have to ask why we don’t ??
If, as contractors, house owners and landlords, we refuse these products in significant enough numbers, change is possible.
We make every effort to be a conscientious contractor, we cannot stand by whilst this scandal remains unchallenged. We do everything possible to ensure our customers receive well built, safe and comfortable buildings. We have to adhere to outdated, muddled regulations, however it is these very regulations that are meaning we are forced to construct potentially unsafe and dangerous environments for our customers.
This has to stop.
Cheshire Living will be doing everything in its power to lobby local Councillors, question Building Control departments and inform its client base wherever possible of the issues concerning fire safety stemming from certain insulation products.
