A favourite from the archive.

We made and fitted this beautiful ash staircase for SpiralUK at Stories Field Centre in Cambridge 8 years ago - a project that went on to win RIBA awards, the Wood Award and be shortlisted for the 2018 RIBA Stirling Prize.

Still a project we are proud to look back on.

A beautiful space, a great brief, and a staircase that really shows what can be achieved with natural timber and careful detailing.

Spring has given us the chance to create some lovely joinery for our customers.

From bespoke windows and doors to handcrafted joinery details, it’s always rewarding to see our work become part of someone’s home.

We thought we’d share a few examples of what we’ve been up to over the last few months.

We’re incredibly grateful to all of our customers for choosing us and trusting us with their homes.

We Need a Joiner… A Good One.

We’re looking for a skilled joiner to join our team.

We’re a small, quality-focused workshop that genuinely cares about what we make and who we make it with. We work to high standards, we support each other, and we take pride in the details.

This is a great company to work for - great people, great projects, and a proper team environment.

If you’re a joiner who:
• Takes pride in their work
• Cares about quality and finish
• Wants to be part of a solid, supportive team
• Has good workshop and/or site experience

…we want to hear from you.

Or — if you know someone good — please tag them or share this post.
Good people know good people, and we need your help to find the right one.

7 MORE SLEEPS!!

It’s a brilliant contract to work on – but it does make the run-up to Christmas a busy one for the team in the workshop!

As the guys add the finishing touches before wrapping and shipping, we want to wish all our friends, suppliers, and customers a wonderful Christmas. 🎄

🌟 It’s Not All Work at David Gilbert Joinery…

We might spend our days crafting beautiful joinery — but outside working hours, the team have very different ways of unwinding…

Belinda – Office Manager
Keeping projects organised and customers happy all week…(if we’re the cogs, Belinda’s the oil!)
🎨 then picking up a paintbrush at the weekend and creating beautiful artwork.
Canvas, walls, furniture — if it stands still, she paints it.

Tom – Lead Joiner
Precision and craftsmanship in the workshop —
🏊‍♂️🚴‍♂️🏃‍♂️ and then off to Europe to race another Ironman.
Either smashing a PB or proudly representing GB. Sometimes both.

David – Being “The Boss” and fitting.
Working closely with customers, fitting joinery, steering the ship…
📚 🚴 then with his head in a nutrition book or cycling across Scotland, Wales, Brittany —
(…or, let’s be honest, mostly on Zwift).

Max – Production Manager
Running the workshop, the paint shop, the scheduling, the logistics
(and that’s only half the list)…
so when he finally stops?
😴 A nap.
Anywhere. Anytime. Impeccable form.

No matter what we’re doing — joinery or hobbies —
we give it everything.

A reimagined space in Mullion Cove.

Bi-folding Accoya doors open along the garden side during long summer days. As autumn turns to winter, the double glazing and insulated roof create a warm space to shelter from the sou’westerlies.

Mullion Cove: Where Pilchards Became “Sardines”

Mullion Cove once powered a thriving pilchard industry.

The old pilchard cellar and net loft beside the harbour cottages are still there today. This is where fish were salted, packed and sometimes lightly smoked before being shipped across Europe. Long before the postcards, it was a busy working harbour.

🐟 Pilchard or Sardine?

They’re the same fish (Sardina pilchardus).
• Smaller → sardines
• Larger → pilchards

Cornwall caught the bigger ones, so the trade was always called pilchard fishing — even though modern marketing now prefers “Cornish Sardines.”

Those old cellars and cottages remain a reminder of that heritage — and it’s a privilege for us to craft joinery that becomes part of Mullion’s story.

Heritage Glazing, Wrapped in Thatch

Yorkshire Pattern Windows — Perfectly at Home in Cadgwith

A beautiful example of tradition meeting craftsmanship: our heritage glazed Yorkshire Pattern window, wrapped seamlessly into a hand-shaped thatched opening.

Although Yorkshire sliders began in the north of England, they became a familiar sight throughout Cornwall’s fishing villages — including Cadgwith, Coverack, Polperro, Mousehole and St Ives. Their simple, weather-resistant design made them ideal for cottages facing Atlantic storms and salt-laden winds.

Unlike vertical sashes, Yorkshire sliders have no cords, no weights and far fewer draught paths. They suited the low eaves, thick stone walls, and irregular thatched openings of Cornish coastal cottages, and were widely used in fish cellars, net lofts and smokehouses where ventilation and durability were essential.

Cadgwith’s Conservation Area even highlights horizontal sliding sashes as an authentic local feature — a reminder of how practical design becomes heritage.

At David Gilbert Joinery we honour that tradition using Accoya timber, heritage glazing, and precision joinery to create windows that feel completely at home in these timeless buildings.

These beautiful casement windows were handcrafted in our workshop and recently installed — all made from Accoya®, our timber of choice for long-lasting, high-performance joinery.

🌿 What is Accoya?

Accoya is a sustainably-sourced softwood that’s been acetylated — a natural, non-toxic modification process that dramatically improves stability, durability and resistance to the elements. It’s essentially timber that has been improved at a cellular level, without plastics or harmful chemicals.

🛠 Why we love it

• 50-year warranty above ground – perfect for Cornwall’s harsh weather
• Exceptional stability – far less swelling, shrinking or sticking
• Ideal for paint finishes – coatings last much longer
• Environmentally friendly – fully sustainable, fully recyclable
• Outstanding durability – comparable to the best hardwoods

For windows and doors designed to last decades — not just years — Accoya gives our clients a product that lives up to our promise:

Joinery to love for a lifetime.
