Is making jewellery on a CNC sliding head machine a good idea?
When you think of jewellery making, CNC sliding head machining probably isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. But for certain jewellery components, it can be a surprisingly good fit.
The pros:
✅ Exceptional accuracy and perfect for small, intricate components where precision matters.
✅ Repeatability once the machine is set, hundreds or thousands of identical pieces can be produced consistently.
✅ Sliding head machines can combine turning and milling operations to create detailed features.
✅ Efficiency when multiple operations can often be completed in one cycle, reducing handling and production time.
✅ Minimal finishing needed as accurately machined parts can require less additional work.
But there are some possible downsides:
❎ Set-up costs for a one-off or very small quantity, programming and setting the machine may not make economic sense.
❎ Material waste when machining jewellery from solid material can generate more waste than traditional jewellery making techniques.
❎ Machine capability vs. the design as not every decorative shape or feature is suited to a sliding head machine.
❎ Finishing is still important as machining may produce the shape, but polishing, plating, engraving or other finishing processes may still be required.
So, is it a good way to make jewellery?
It totally depends on the design, material, quantity and required finish.
For precision jewellery components that need to be small, consistent and highly repeatable, CNC sliding head machining can offer some interesting possibilities. And, of course, it's also a pretty good way to show just what these machines can do!
