We’re very lucky to have a lovely lady on the Qualiturn team who regularly treats us to homemade cakes and sweet treats. 🍰🧁

But today, she’s swapped the sugar for vinegar… it’s pickled onions! 🧅😂

Green energy, all the way!

Our 24,000+ sq ft facility in Hertford is powered by 100% green energy, with solar panels, energy efficient processes and a strong focus on recycling and reducing waste. We’ve even added bug houses to encourage local wildlife!

And now, our latest addition is a fully electric Kia van

So, the precision turned parts we manufacture using 100% green energy can now be delivered locally using 100% green energy too.

Another step towards reducing our carbon footprint, we just need to work out how to make it look properly Qualiturn! 😄

What better way to spend a Qualiturn family fun day than at Hertfordshire Zoo

We started the day with breakfast, followed by a fascinating Lemur talk. The lemurs were slow to appear, but they did eventually make an appearance. The best question asked was “Do Lemurs like to move it, move it?” Our guide was unable to confirm or deny! 😂

We then had time to explore before meeting up again for lunch, with even more time afterwards to enjoy everything the zoo has to offer, including the train and dinosaur crazy golf!

It was so lovely to see our team, their families and little ones enjoying a day together outside of work.

We were also pleased to support Hertfordshire Zoo and the important work they do around wildlife conservation, animal welfare, education and protecting endangered species.

Is making jewellery on a CNC sliding head machine a good idea?

When you think of jewellery making, CNC sliding head machining probably isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. But for certain jewellery components, it can be a surprisingly good fit.

The pros:
✅ Exceptional accuracy and perfect for small, intricate components where precision matters.
✅ Repeatability once the machine is set, hundreds or thousands of identical pieces can be produced consistently.
✅ Sliding head machines can combine turning and milling operations to create detailed features.
✅ Efficiency when multiple operations can often be completed in one cycle, reducing handling and production time.
✅ Minimal finishing needed as accurately machined parts can require less additional work.

But there are some possible downsides:
❎ Set-up costs for a one-off or very small quantity, programming and setting the machine may not make economic sense.
❎ Material waste when machining jewellery from solid material can generate more waste than traditional jewellery making techniques.
❎ Machine capability vs. the design as not every decorative shape or feature is suited to a sliding head machine.
❎ Finishing is still important as machining may produce the shape, but polishing, plating, engraving or other finishing processes may still be required.

So, is it a good way to make jewellery?

It totally depends on the design, material, quantity and required finish.

For precision jewellery components that need to be small, consistent and highly repeatable, CNC sliding head machining can offer some interesting possibilities. And, of course, it's also a pretty good way to show just what these machines can do!

Happy birthday to our founders, Bernard and Mary Groom. They both celebrated birthdays last week and one happened to be a BIG one!

Their decision to start Qualiturn in 1974 began with the purchase of 10 machines that were for sale in Suffolk, These were moved to premises in Brewhouse Lane, Hertford, not far from where we are located today. Their journey has had many twists and turns but they still can’t keep away and we are grateful for their continued dedication and hard work.

Happy 80th birthday Mary, we hope you enjoyed the celebrations and feeding the highland cattle. 💚

At Qualiturn, we don't just recycle our metal swarf, we turn it into briquettes.

Why? Because it's better for our business and better for the environment.
