What’s occurring? 👀

If you’ve driven down Burn Lane in Hexham this week, you may have spotted two large, interconnected water tanks positioned outside the RED Technology Centre (RTC).

No — it’s not a new water storage system to cope with the recent heatwave…

This setup is part of our ongoing work to develop a remotely operated tool to level out sand in Bulk Storage Tanks at Sellafield Ltd (see previous post for context 👉 https://lnkd.in/ea955v-Z).

To help us optimise the design, our local engineering analysis partner PDL Group has recently completed a programme of CFD modelling of how the stored sand behaves when agitated.

The equipment you can see is a purpose-built test rig, designed to validate that modelling with real-world physical data. This step is critical — giving us confidence that the final tool will perform as expected when deployed on site.

It’s a great example of agile engineering in action: combining simulation, collaboration, and hands-on testing to reduce risk and improve outcomes.

In support of Mental Health Awareness Week 2026, came together today for a bit of lunchtime fun and food, connection and wellbeing for Wear It Green Day 💚.

Lots of fun and laughter with the support of our Thursday keep fit task master Anna Little Exercise Specialist, followed by what is described as "Mega Lunch" provided by our good friends at Top Nosh and finished off with some "fresh out the oven scones" from World Cafe just up the road.

And final thanks to our next door neighbours at Adapt for allowing us to go with the wet weather plan and use their very handy resource room.

It was a great reminder of the importance of taking time to step away, connect with colleagues, and look after our mental wellbeing.

Good people, good food, and great moments together.

Because mental health matters — every day.

The 2026 RED Report is live!

Over the past year, we’ve continued to support some of the world’s most challenging energy projects — from nuclear decommissioning and new build, to the development of fusion technology and delivery of offshore and subsea projects.

Our report highlights how we’re delivering innovative engineering solutions that make working in hazardous environments safer, whilst investing in our people, our capabilities and our community.

Thank you to our clients, partners and the incredible for their collaboration, commitment and expertise throughout the year.

We’re excited about the opportunities ahead as we continue to contribute to a safer, more resilient energy future.

Take a look at how our last year went!

Another month, another new starter!

We are very pleased to welcome Mark Kerton who joins us as a Lead Test Engineer.

With 20+ years of relevant industry experience and specialist expertise in subsea cables and umbilicals, Mark is perfectly placed to support the delivery of RED’s cable testing services, as well as wider verification and validation testing.

He’s already hit the ground running, kicking off with a cable bend test using our in‑house TABS rig.

Welcome to 🙂

Our very own MD Joe Orrell celebrated a VERY special birthday this week.

So in true TeamRED style, we went out and did something to mark the occasion... Batman, Robin and Uncle Albert all celebrating a special milestone birthday.

First stop was our good friends at AllOut Adventures at Slaley Hall. We always have a brilliant time with these guys, the team are topnotch. Thank you so much guys.

Then onto a surprise party at the new Tyne Valley Taproom. What a great night, a fantastic venue, great people, great music and food. We wish them all the success in their new venture.

Thank you very much to The Party Arch for decorating the room for us getting there.

Great day spent with great people.

Always Learning

This is a key trait of our RED Engineers, and last week Ben Russell was delighted to attend the 2026 DEWESoft Measurement Conference in Slovenia, where he had the opportunity to:

✅ Present RED’s approach to data acquisition, using a Sellafield project case study to showcase how we’ve developed an integrated system to acquire, process and present complex test data.

✅ Learn from engineers across multiple industries, attending presentations led by researchers and automotive and aerospace manufacturers, including NASA.

✅ Take part in technical workshops and a DEWESoft factory tour, exploring the latest innovations in data measurement, recording and analysis.

The event was also a great opportunity for Ben to further develop his presentation skills, as well as learn more about the history of Slovenia and how DEWESoft positively impacts its local community — insights shared by the Slovenian President herself 😊

A fantastic event that ensures RED remains at the cutting edge of data acquisition, delivering real value for our clients.

A big thank you to our hosts at Dewesoft 👏

Please give a warm welcome to Logan. Logan joined having completed his BEng in Mechanical Engineering at University of Northumbria and is already making a very valuable contribution to RED, working on a number of projects developing new technology for Sellafield.

Welcome Logan!

A significant milestone at RED as we received our largest Steel Tube Umbilical (STU) samples to date from a leading UK cable and umbilical manufacturer. The two 20m long samples will soon undergo bend-with-tension testing as part of an ongoing programme to verify mechanical performance in accordance with ISO 13628‑5.

Expertly delivered by MRC, a trusted local supply chain partner that regularly provides RED with specialist lifting and transportation services, the safe handling of ever larger samples at our RTC is an important aspect of our one stop service to efficiently deliver independent test data – from test programme development, design and build of project specific test equipment, through sample preparation and test ex*****on, to the provision of concise reports with technical analysis.

A big thank you to the MRC Crane Hire team for their professionalism and for capturing the operation with some first class drone footage.

Welcome Callum 😁

Last week we were delighted to welcome another new team member to the team - Callum Lawson.

Callum joins RED as an Engineering Technician where he’ll play a key role in assembling and testing specialist equipment in the RTC.

He brings a wealth of relevant experience from his previous role at a test facility, working with clients from across the energy sector.

He is already hands on, supporting his first project, the qualification testing of a subsea umbilical cable.

His technical expertise is a welcome addition to the team as we continue to develop and build our capabilities.
