Today we had two special visitors at RED Engineering! 🏎️🔧

Finn and Ben (taxied by Grandad) called in to tell us all about their STEM on Track project, where they have been building and racing their own go-kart while learning about science, maths, design and engineering along the way.

As well as getting hands-on with engines, brakes and assembly, they're also learning about the business side of projects by seeking sponsorship from local companies. Their hard work took them all the way to a racing event near Silverstone, where they got to compete against other school teams from across the country.

Supporting passionate young people like Finn and Ben fits perfectly with our commitment to encouraging the next generation of engineers and helping local children get involved in sport, STEM and new opportunities.

Good luck, lads, we really enjoyed your visit and will be cheering you on with your next venture! 👏

We recently enjoyed our Annual Summer BBQ, the perfect opportunity for colleagues and their families to catch up and spend time together outside of work. We have it on very good authority ( from all the children!) that it is one of the main highlights of the RED social calendar.

Creating a positive, supportive culture is incredibly important to us and that's one of the reasons RED is such a great place to work.

One of the joys of working at RED is the variety of projects and the opportunity to try new things.

At RED, we’re usually focussed on designing and building new equipment for remote operations in hazardous environments but recently we’ve been re-commissioning an existing prototype remote intervention tool that was used for inactive development of equipment by Sellafield Ltd.

This project gave us the opportunity to try ice blasting for the first time, where non-destructive cleaning was required on a selection of one-off stainless-steel fabrications.

A big thanks to Frost Works from Jarrow, who set up the system in our RTC workshop and carried out the ice blasting process.

As you can see the results were genuinely impressive!

A great example of how our projects can provide opportunities to learn, innovate and improve the way we work.

🎉 Congratulations Izzy! 🎉

Please join us in congratulating Isobel Thompson, who has received her results today and has been awarded a First-Class Master of Mechanical Engineering degree.

Izzy's journey with RED began in 2021 when she joined us for a week of work experience. Since then, we've had the pleasure of supporting her throughout her university studies and watching her develop into a talented engineer.

We are delighted to share that Izzy will be joining the RED team in a full-time role from January 2027, and we couldn't be more excited to welcome her back.

Achieving a First-Class Master's degree is a fantastic accomplishment and a testament to Izzy's hard work, dedication, and commitment.

Congratulations, Izzy – we are incredibly proud of you and can't wait to see what you achieve next. See you soon!

The crane has been back… but why?

At RED, practical testing is a critical part of how we develop first-of-a-kind equipment. Using real-world data allows us to reduce technical risk and design with confidence.

We’re currently developing a pumping system for a decommissioning application, featuring an air-operated double diaphragm (AODD) pump. As you’d expect, pump performance is central to the success of the operation—so we’ve been carrying out a detailed programme of testing to fully understand its capabilities.

So where does the crane come in?

We used it to simulate operations across a range of head heights, enabling us to map the pump’s performance envelope under real world conditions.
The data we’ve gathered will now directly inform the detailed design of the final system—ensuring it performs exactly as required when deployed.

We talk a lot about physical health, but we know mental health is just as important—and for men, it’s too often ignored.

In the UK, men account for around 75% of all su***de deaths, and su***de remains the leading cause of death for men under 50.

Despite this, men are far less likely to seek help, with many struggling in silence due to stigma and barriers to opening up.

Heart Wood Mental Health Charity, based near Hexham, is a local charity offering men living with poor mental health the opportunity to access group counselling sessions in nature, facilitated by professional therapists. A very much-needed service in a world where too many men feel they have to face things alone.
