🌱 NEW – Cloudburst® Annual Service & Preventative Maintenance Package

This blocked £10 air filter could be taking years off the life of a £5,000+ drive.

The photograph below is from a real irrigation control panel – and the air intake filter was almost completely blocked.

It might not look like a major problem, but restricted airflow can dramatically increase temperatures inside a control panel and prevent Variable Speed Drives (VSDs) and other electronic equipment from cooling correctly.

Heat is one of the biggest enemies of power electronics.

VSDs contain temperature-sensitive components, particularly the electrolytic capacitors used within the DC bus. As a general engineering principle, a 10°C increase in operating temperature can approximately halve the expected life of temperature-sensitive electronic components.

A blocked filter can therefore contribute to premature ageing of a drive worth thousands of pounds.

And it isn't just the VSD.

Excessive panel temperatures place additional thermal stress on PLCs, 24VDC power supplies, HMIs, communications equipment and other electronic components, potentially reducing their service life and increasing the likelihood of failure when the system is needed most.

With irrigation systems often working hardest during the hottest and busiest part of the year, preventative maintenance makes sense.

That's why we're introducing the Cloudburst® Annual Service & Preventative Maintenance Package.

The annual service includes, but isn't limited to:

⚡ NICEIC Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR)
Inspection and testing of the electrical installation, helping customers meet their electrical maintenance obligations and any applicable insurer requirements.

🔧 Electrical connection & torque checks
Motor, VSD, isolator and appropriate power connections inspected and checked to the manufacturer's specified torque where applicable. Thermal cycling, vibration and repeated operation can contribute to connection problems over time.

🌡️ Thermal imaging inspection
Thermal inspection of electrical equipment under load where practical, helping identify abnormal heating and potentially deteriorating connections before they develop into failures.

🌬️ Replacement of panel ventilation filters
All panel air filters replaced and ventilation paths inspected to maintain adequate airflow through the enclosure.

❄️ Cooling system inspection & cleaning
Panel cooling fans, VSD fans, heatsinks, vents and airflow paths inspected for contamination, obstruction and correct operation.

⚙️ VSD health checks
Drive fault histories, operating temperatures, running hours and available diagnostic information reviewed for indications of developing problems. Fan and capacitor life information will also be checked where supported by the drive.

🖥️ Cloudburst® software updates
PLC and HMI software updated to the latest applicable Cloudburst® release, including reliability improvements and additional functionality where available.

🔐 HMI, modem & communications updates
Firmware and communications equipment reviewed and updated where appropriate to maintain security, compatibility and operational reliability.

💾 System backup
Current PLC, HMI and VSD configurations backed up and archived, providing an up-to-date recovery point should equipment ever need to be replaced following a failure.

🔌 Full control panel inspection
PLCs, power supplies, relays, contactors, protective devices, terminals and other components inspected for signs of overheating, deterioration, contamination or damage.

📋 Annual condition & preventative maintenance report
A report detailing the work completed, equipment condition, defects identified and any recommendations – allowing maintenance to be planned before a minor problem becomes an in-season breakdown.

Already using Cloudburst® 4G Remote Access & App Support?

The new annual service package can be added to your existing annual Cloudburst® 4G Remote Access & App package, bringing remote connectivity, software support, electrical inspection and preventative maintenance together into one annual package.

Irrigation control equipment operates in a demanding environment. Heat, dust, moisture, long operating hours and periods of intense seasonal use.

A little preventative maintenance can make the difference between finding a developing problem during a planned winter service visit and finding it when the irrigation system stops in the middle of July.

Prevent it in winter. Don't discover it in summer.

After a week off with the kids in sunny Skeg Vegas, it was back in the saddle today for a Sunday session, starting the design work on a new intake and transfer system for a animal feed mill in Kent.

A decent-sized project to get stuck into - 36 motors, 50 slides, 48 level devices, around 3 km of cabling and containment.

Nothing like easing yourself back in gently after a week off! 😂

Enough for one day, I’m off for a pint 🍻

Today marked the successful completion of a new dryer control panel and control system installation for one of the UK’s leading dry dog food manufacturers.

With over 200 years of heritage, our customer has built a reputation for producing some of the finest dry dog food in the industry. It was a privilege to play a part in another investment in their production facilities.

The project featured a new control panel built around a Rockwell Automation PLC and PowerFlex drives, with commissioning carried out alongside the excellent team from Wenger. It was a pleasure working with them to bring the system online.

A huge thank you to our installation team, led by Wes and Arbo, whose hard work, professionalism and attention to detail ensured the project was completed safely, efficiently and on schedule. A fantastic effort from everyone involved.

Another quality project delivered by the team at Essential Automation Ltd.

⚠️ Planned Mobile Network Maintenance – Monday 20th July

Our 4G network provider has advised us of planned maintenance taking place between 11:00pm Monday 20th July and 2:00am Tuesday 21st July (BST).

During this maintenance, Cloudburst-connected sites may briefly disconnect and automatically reconnect to the mobile network. No prolonged outage is expected, and normal operation should resume automatically.

What to expect:
• A brief loss of remote connectivity during the maintenance window.
• Pump stations and controllers should reconnect automatically.
• No action is required unless a site remains offline after the maintenance window, in which case a simple power cycle of the control panel may be required.

💧 A live snapshot from the Cloudburst® master dashboard…

At this moment, the irrigation systems connected to Cloudburst® are pumping 4,987 m³ of water every hour.

To put that into perspective…

• 💦 4.99 million litres of water every hour, or for the old folk… about 1.1 million gallons 😉

• 🏊 Enough to fill an Olympic-size swimming pool every 30 minutes

• 🚒 Enough to fill around 500 UK fire engines every hour

• 📦 Filling 4,987 IBC containers every hour

• 🏡 Enough water to meet the average daily water demand of over 11,000 UK homes – every single hour.

Watching a single dashboard coordinate this volume of water while continuously monitoring pump performance, pressures, flows, alarms and system health across multiple irrigation sites is something we’re incredibly proud of.

Not bad for a system that started with a simple idea: there had to be a smarter way to control irrigation pumps than the conventional approach.

Today, Cloudburst® is helping growers move millions of litres of water every hour, giving them complete visibility and control of their irrigation systems from anywhere in the world.

Yesterday our inbox received over 600 emails from the 40+ pump houses currently running on our Cloudburst® Irrigation Control System... 😳📧

At the time, hard-coding my own email address into the C # mail routine seemed like a perfectly sensible idea...

Fast forward a few years and Cloudburst® is now sending daily reports, alarms and system updates from sites across the country. My inbox is beginning to question some of my earlier programming decisions! 😂

The screenshots show:
📧 What 600+ automated emails look like.
📊 One of the daily irrigation reports generated by Cloudburst®.
💻 The rather embarrassing line of C # code responsible for directing every single one of them to me!

Sometimes the quickest solution becomes tomorrow's technical debt... but it's a nice problem to have when it means more and more irrigation systems are running on Cloudburst®.

Swift weekend rip out & refit!

10/06/2026

One of our engineers captured this from the comfort of his van today while waiting out a pretty impressive hail, thunder and rain storm.

You’d think weather like this would give irrigation systems a day off, but every year we’re reminded that’s not how it works.

At Essential Automation Ltd, our engineers are out every day supporting irrigation control systems, and despite conditions like these, we’re still inundated with breakdown calls from 6am through to 8pm, 7 days a week.

It’s a credit to the dedication of our team that, whatever the weather throws at them, they’re out there keeping systems running and customers supported.

Stay safe out there, everyone 🤣

3rd new Cloudburst irrigation control system commissioned this week.

This one replaces an ancient Tufts & Whitton panel that’s given nearly 40 years of service. Built properly back then — although over the years it’s definitely been “modified” a few times!

Best discovery was finding the original 100A fuses had been replaced with a 125A main switch 🤣

Always satisfying bringing these old systems up to modern standards while keeping irrigation running reliably, saving growers energy and reducing costs.

Still driving miles to commission irrigation systems? There’s a better way.

Not long ago, commissioning meant hours on the road, only to arrive on site and find things weren’t ready! Time lost, money lost.

This morning, I’m sat at home with a brew and a bacon roll… commissioning three irrigation systems simultaneously across East Anglia.

That’s the difference with the Cloudburst® Irrigation Control System.

From anywhere, we can access:

· Drive parameters
· Process constants & setpoints
· SMS alerts & messaging
· Mobile connectivity
· Full reporting

No travel. No delays. No wasted days.

What does that mean for you?

✅ Faster commissioning
✅ Reduced labour and travel costs
✅ Lower energy usage
✅ Better visibility and control of your system
✅ Immediate response to issues

And you don’t need to start from scratch.

If your irrigation system was installed by us from 2018 onwards, or if you’re running a Tufts & Whitton system from 2010 onwards, you can upgrade to the Cloudburst® platform cost-effectively, without replacing your entire control panel.

It’s a simple step that delivers a big return.

If you’re looking to reduce downtime, cut costs, and take full control of your irrigation system, let’s talk.

📞 Get in touch with Essential Automation Ltd to find out how easy it is to upgrade.
