SEND provision is often discussed in terms of staffing and funding. The physical environment is just as influential.

Light levels, acoustics, circulation routes and access to calm breakout space directly affect how pupils regulate and engage.

When these factors are considered early in a project, inclusion becomes embedded. Design choices are educational decisions.

The government’s recent announcement on skills funding places renewed focus on the role of further education colleges in delivering technical and digital training at scale.

We examine what the announcement means for college estates teams and how policy ambition translates into delivering real teaching environments.

Education projects commonly struggle when design, cost and buildability are not aligned from the outset.

Covered spaces in schools are sometimes viewed as a place to simply huddle, on a wet Tuesday breaktime.

In reality, the right canopy can allow schools to provide consistent and effective provision, all year round, impacting a huge range of outcomes for staff and pupils.

Sheltered dining areas, circulation routes and outdoor learning zones allow schools to maintain routines throughout the year. They reduce pressure on internal areas and extend the usable footprint of the site without major building works.

For many estates teams, that flexibility matters as much as additional square metres.

Sixth form provision is growing in importance, yet the space allocated to it is often inherited rather than designed.

Post 16 students need environments that support independent study, social identity and aspiration. When space is treated as an afterthought, it affects recruitment, retention and daily experience.

Purpose designed sixth form environments are no longer a luxury. They are part of competitive positioning.

Winter disruption on school sites is all too common. With the UK experiencing wet, cold and windy conditions across large chunks of the academic year, more schools are rethinking how their external spaces could work, year-round.

Well-designed, covered canopies help to keep sites running smoothly, reducing pressure and disruption.

Find out more about how covered external spaces can support schools in using their facilities more consistently, whatever the weather.
