The SPAB Fellowship was one of the most eye-opening experiences for Harvey. He travelled the country meeting top conservators from different disciplines to explore the varied building techniques often unique to each county.
Many friends and allies were made and Harvey was proud of his association with the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings.
His experience on the Fellowship sparked a life long passion for historic houses and steered the firm into focusing on conservation as their speciality.
I’m (Sophy) sharing this picture because we’ve been very quiet on here for a while and then this popped up on my timeline.
We miss your passion and guidance Harvey, but J.Layzell and Sons is continuing to deliver exceptional craftsmanship. Our work on the first of the new properties you envisioned is nearly completed. You had such a clear picture in your head of how they should be. We trust you will be proud.

LAYZELL Harvey Justin passed away on 13th April 2022 aged 53 years. He is survived by his father Peter and brother Edward who he worked alongside for the majority of his life. He leaves his wife Sophy and daughter Amelia heartbroken.

His funeral service will take place at St Peter’s Church, Horton, on Friday 6th May at 2pm, then afterwards at the Bell Broadway.

A stonemason/bricklayer is required to join a conservation firm, working on historic and listed buildings throughout Devon and Somerset. We are an award-winning family run business with decades of experience since 1895.

We are now recruiting an experienced stonemason/bricklayer who can:

Work well in a team and communicate effectively on site

Work with instruction and independently efficiently

Understand plans, details and specifications

Demonstrate an excellent eye for detail

Work reliably and consistently to a high standard and have references available on request.

Main duties include blockwork, overseeing trainee stonemasons on site, loading and unloading materials, mixing mortar and keeping sites clean and tidy

City & Guilds/NVQ levels 2 &/or 3 plus Site experience and a CSCS card & full driving licence is essential

Ideally the suitable candidate would have an interest in historic buildings and a keenness to learn.

Job Types: Full-time, Permanent

Salary: Depends on level of experience

LAYZELL Ann Elisabeth passed away on 6th December 2021 aged 79 years. Dearly loved wife of Peter, much loved mum of Edward and Harvey, Grandma of Jemima, Amelia and Tiffany and mother-in-law to Sophy & Julie.
Funeral service to take place at St Peter’s Church, Horton, on Monday 20th December at 1pm. We invite you to celebrate Ann’s life by wearing a splash of colour.

28 May 1942 - 6 December 2021
Ann was the driving force behind J. Layzell & Sons since her marriage to Jeremiah Peter Layzell right up to her death. She will be missed deeply by her friends and family who are all shocked by her unexpected passing.
May she rest in peace.

The Castle Hotel has the perfect view of both the war memorial and the Market House that we had the pleasure of working on a few years ago.

Both are currently beautifully lit up by the Christmas decorations in town. Well worth a visit!

If you’ve ever visited our yard you’ll know we spend a lot of time growing things so it’s no wonder we are trying our best to conserve what plants we can on our building plot.

The hedge at the back has been there since great gran had her hens here and that was possibly 100 years ago or more!

There’s also a well-established hedge that runs along the drive and that’s also been here a while. Not quite as long, probably about 40 years, the same as the beech tree which was planted by Ann and Peter Layzell when this was their garden.

Fingers crossed everything survives and that the next residents love them as much as we do.
