Thick granite walls.

That's what Marc's house is built from, the kind of old house people assume is too awkward for a heat pump. The oil system came out, and a new air source heat pump, hot water cylinder, radiators and pipework went in, with solar and battery storage alongside.

"We had a new air source heat pump, hot water tank, radiators, and all piping all renewed. They decommissioned and removed the old oil heating system and radiators. We also had a solar system installed with battery storage.

This was all completed within 2 1/2 days, outstanding work."

Carpets and floorboards had to come up for the new pipework, and the electrician had a metre of granite to drill through. By the time the team left, the carpets were back down and the house was tidy.

Old stone isn't a reason to rule a heat pump out. It's a reason to survey the house properly first.

Every winter, same question. Does it still work when it is freezing.

Worth watching this before you rule one out.

Not one panel on this roof faces south.

Most people rule themselves out before they ever get a quote because their roof runs east to west. It is the most common reason I hear, and it is the one that costs people the most.

Thirty two panels, split across two pitches. You lose the midday spike a south roof gives you, and what you get back is a longer run, morning through to evening, matched far better to when a house is actually drawing power.

Your roof is probably fine. Most of them are.

"Declined by another supplier."

That's how Fraser described his house before we surveyed it. Not a difficult install as it turned out, just one that needed somebody to go and look properly rather than price it off a template.

"Our install was not a typical job which was declined by another supplier. It wasn't hard, it just required a bit more work to assess our property to make sure the Air Sourced Heat Pump system worked as needed. After 6 weeks of operation it's as expected, works great and is cutting our electricity bill."

Most houses up here need a proper look before anyone can price them. Old stone, thick walls, nowhere obvious for a cylinder, half an hour from anywhere.

If you've been told no, it's worth a second opinion. We'll survey it properly, and if the honest answer is still no, we'll tell you that too.

Some numbers about solar that most companies will not tell you.

With solar on its own you will use somewhere between 35 and 50 percent of what your panels make. The rest of it goes back to the grid.

Put a battery in and that goes up to around 75 to 80 percent.

Anyone telling you that you can use all 100 percent of what you generate is lying.

We design and install solar, battery storage and heat pumps across the Highlands and Scotland. MCS certified, whole systems, start to finish.

Most people assume a home battery keeps the lights on in a power cut. It does not.

A standard battery shuts down with the grid. It has to, for the safety of anyone working on the line.

This one at Rosemarkie is a SigenStor, paired with a Sigen Energy Gateway so the house switches itself over to backup instead.

Seven months on.

We can model a saving before we install. What we can't do is tell you how it actually feels a winter later. Only the customer can.

Carmen had her heat pump fitted by us and left this review seven months after we finished:

"It's now 7 months after McInnes installed our heatpump and we're still very happy with it, 100% recommend! Our heating bills are about half of what they were last year."

Her figures and her experience, not our estimate. Which is what makes it worth reading.

From 1 October, the new Ofgem price cap sets electricity at 26.32p a unit and gas at 7.97p. Here is what that will mean for the cost of heating your home.

On those numbers gas looks untouchable. It isn't, because a unit of fuel is not a unit of heat. Put gas through a boiler running at 90 per cent — a fair, conservative figure — and the heat coming out of your radiators will cost 8.86p per kWh. Oil, at the Scottish average, works out at 12.08p. Direct electric panel heaters are 26.32p, because there is no conversion to be had.

Those are the numbers worth comparing against.

A heat pump running at a SCOP of 3.0 delivers heat at 8.77p. Level with gas, near enough, and already well under oil. At 4.0 it is 6.58p — 26 per cent cheaper than gas, close to half the cost of oil, and exactly a quarter of direct electric.

Where your system lands on that scale is not decided by which unit you buy. It is a design question — the heat loss calculation, the emitters you run it through, and the flow temperature the system is designed around. Get those right and you sit near the top of the range. Get them wrong and you sit at the bottom, and you live with it every month for the next twenty years.

One thing the per-unit figures leave out: standing charges. From October gas carries 29.68p a day, about £108 a year, and that goes entirely when the gas connection does.

We have put the full working — and everything else that changes on 1 October — on the website. Link in the first comment.

"They kept their radiators."

That's the part most people don't expect when they ask us about a heat pump.

This one's in Acharacle. The old oil boiler had been bolted to the back of the house for years, and you can see the tank sitting in the garden behind it. It's gone now, and a Panasonic Aquarea L Series 7kW sits in exactly the same spot.

Not just the same spot either. It's on the old boiler's own base. Part of the reason we specified the L Series here is its footprint, compact enough to fit what was already there. No new groundwork, no new pipe runs. We raised it on stands above that base, mind, because that corner takes water when the weather does what the west coast does.

What didn't change: every radiator stayed where it was, and so did nearly all the pipework. The indoor unit and the new hot water cylinder both went into the loft, so nobody lost a cupboard to make room for it.

The only things we replaced were the things that needed replacing.

That's not luck, it's the survey. We do a room-by-room MCS heat loss calculation on every house, which tells us the flow temperature the existing radiators can actually deliver. Get that right and most of them stay. Skip it, and the safe thing to quote is a whole new set. More cost, more mess, more days in your house.

£9,000 Home Energy Scotland grant, being £7,500 plus the £1,500 rural and island uplift. Estimated £900 to £1,200 a year off their heating costs against oil, based on our MCS heat loss calculations.

If you're off-gas anywhere in the Highlands and you've been told a heat pump means gutting the house, it's worth a conversation. We'll survey it properly and tell you honestly what your house needs, including if the honest answer is "not yet".

Acharacle, Ardnamurchan. McInnes Group, MCS certified and Home Energy Scotland approved.

A bad survey causes more problems than a bad install. Miss something at survey stage and you can end up with a heat pump that's undersized, pipework in the wrong place, or a system that just doesn't perform the way it should once it's in.

Get the survey right, and everything after it goes the way it should.
