Tuesday evening thought: when did you last have a proper clear-out of your car?

Old receipts, parking tickets, forgotten gym kit, a bag of shopping from six weeks ago — we've seen all sorts come in for an MOT over the years.

One genuine tip worth mentioning: loose heavy objects in the car can become dangerous in a sudden stop. Worth a sort-out before winter, when you might end up throwing on the brakes a bit sharper than expected.

A wee 5-minute look can save a right headache later.

Tyres, battery, lights, wipers and fluids are the big ones as the weather turns. If one of them feels “off”, get it checked before it becomes a proper no-start or no-see-where-you’re-going moment.

Cold Monday morning. Clocks have gone back. This is exactly when batteries start telling you what they actually think.

Car batteries don't usually fail in summer. They fail when it's cold, dark, and you've got somewhere to be.

If your car has been a bit slow to turn over lately, or if the battery is three years old or more, it's worth getting it tested before the first real frost arrives. A battery test takes a few minutes and can save a lot of standing in a car park waiting for someone with jump leads.

The clocks went back last night — which means darker evenings start from today.

If you haven't already, it's worth checking all your lights before the working week begins. More pedestrians, cyclists, and horse riders will be on roads in lower light. Morning sun glare is a factor for a few weeks too.

Also a good time to test your battery if it's a few years old. Cold starts on dark mornings will tell you quickly if it's on its way out.
