Timing Chain vs Timing Belt

They do exactly the same job.

But...

A timing chain is made from metal.

A timing belt is made from reinforced rubber.

Chains generally last much longer...

Belts need replacing at manufacturer intervals.

One isn't necessarily better than the other...

They're simply different engineering designs.

Tyre Tread

The legal minimum tread depth is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre around its entire circumference.

That's the legal minimum.

But stopping distances increase well before that.

Many drivers choose to replace tyres earlier, especially before winter or if they regularly drive in wet conditions.

Why oil matters more than people realise

It actually helps protect the timing belt itself.

Meta What does a timing belt actually do?

Imagine your engine is like an orchestra.

The pistons.
The valves.
The injectors.

They all have to play at exactly the right time.

The timing belt keeps everything perfectly synchronised.

If that belt snaps...

Unfortunately your engine can go from perfectly healthy...
..to requiring thousands of pounds worth of repairs in seconds.

Which is exactly why manufacturers recommend changing them before they fail.

Timing Belts, Timing Chains & Wet Belts...

They're all designed to do the same job... but they're definitely not the same thing!

One of the questions we get asked a lot is:

"Does my car have a timing belt?"

The honest answer?

Maybe...

Maybe not...

Your engine could have:

✔ A timing chain

✔ A traditional timing belt

✔ A wet timing belt

Each has different service intervals, different costs and different maintenance requirements.
