Deafness & Hearing Loss: Myths vs Facts:

❌ Myth 1: All deaf people use sign language.

✅ Fact: Not all deaf people use BSL. In fact, some use speech, lipreading, written communication, or assistive technology. Communication preferences can vary massively.

❌ Myth 2: Hearing aids or cochlear implants "fix" deafness.
✅ Fact: These devices aid hearing, but they don’t restore "normal" hearing. Users may still rely on other cues and have difficulty in certain environments.

❌ Myth 3: Deaf people can't speak.
✅ Fact: Many deaf or hard of hearing people do speak. Speech ability depends on factors such as: hearing level, access to speech therapy, and personal choice.

❌ Myth 4: Deafness only affects older people.
✅ Fact: Hearing loss can affect anyone, at any age—including children and young adults. There are many causes, from genetics to illness or noise exposure.

❌ Myth 5: You can tell someone is deaf by looking at them.
✅ Fact: Hearing loss is often invisible. That’s why it's important to practice inclusive communication with everyone.

❌ Myth 6: Lipreading is easy.
✅ Fact: Only around 30–40% of English speech is visible on the lips. Lipreading takes practice and is often used alongside other cues.

❌ Myth 7: Deaf people can't enjoy music.
✅ Fact: Many deaf individuals enjoy music through vibration, rhythm, or visual elements like lyrics or performances in BSL.
