On This Day: 16 June 1881

The grade of Associate was introduced as part of the revised rules of the institution, creating a new pathway for individuals to become connected with the professional community of gas engineers.

More than 140 years later, that same principle of welcoming and developing people within the industry continues through IGEM Associate Membership.

Becoming an Associate Member is the first step in a professional journey with IGEM. It provides an opportunity for anyone working in or connected to the gas sector, whether in an engineering role or another area of the industry, to gain recognition, build connections and access opportunities for professional growth.

From those first steps in 1881 to today, IGEM continues to support individuals at every stage of their careers, helping members develop their knowledge, skills and contribution to the future of the gas industry.

In the June/July edition of Gi, Mark Browne of Armstrong Fluid Technology explores how changing gas flow patterns are increasing the importance of reliable gas preheating systems.

As demand profiles shift, pressure reduction systems face greater challenges around temperature control, efficiency and reliability. The feature looks at how smarter controls, remote monitoring and off-site manufacturing are helping operators respond to changing operational demands.

🚀 The IGEM team is at The Big Bang Fair from today!

We're proud to be supporting one of the UK's biggest celebrations of STEM. Joining us are National Gas and Skewb Ltd as we work together to inspire young people to explore the exciting opportunities that engineering can offer.

By engaging with the next generation and showcasing careers across the energy and engineering sectors, we're helping to encourage future talent and support efforts to address the skills gap facing our industry.

If you're attending the Fair, come and say hello to the team at the NEC Birmingham.

In the June/July edition of Gi, IGEM explores new research into the role biomethane and hybrid heating could play in the UK’s decarbonisation targets.

New modelling from Imperial College London suggests a more balanced energy transition, combining electrification with biomethane, hybrid heating systems and existing gas infrastructure, could help lower whole-system costs while improving resilience and flexibility.
