A St Austell Brewery barrel came to us worn out but full of history. It was originally used as a water source for a 4" scale steam engine, a model of a full-size Burrell single crank, named “The Rifleman” in honour of the owner’s lifetime of service in the forces.

Having come to the end of its working life, we rebuilt the cask from scratch using timber from a sherry puncheon. Thick, high-quality wood that should last a very long time. All of the original brass fittings were carefully retained and reinstalled.

Completed using hand tools only, every detail was worked by hand to replicate the original look.

It’s a privilege to be part of a project like this. Craftsmanship, history, and service all in one.

We're a little late posting this, but we were really proud to play a small part in the opening of the Keith Primary School playground.

It was great to support the KPS Frog Squad with their project, and even better to see the kids get stuck into painting our barrel lids — they turned out brilliantly! The new outdoor space, garden and classroom look fantastic, and it’s all down to some amazing effort from the school and the local community 👏

We’ve had a busy few weeks at Oakwood Cooperage, having recently launched the Oakwood Barrel Craft website: www.oakwoodbarrelcraft.co.uk

Everything’s now in one place - planters, dog beds, firewood and more. Every piece comes from genuine whisky barrels or wine casks, reused and repurposed, so nothing goes to waste.

The transformation continues in Part 2 of making an Octave from an American Standard Barrel (ASB). This is where the cooper’s work really comes to life. In this final stage, we resize the heads, add split reeds for a watertight seal, scrape the joints, reduce and secure the hoops, and drill a b**g hole to prepare the cask for its new purpose.

What would you make from a lorry load of casks?
Oakwood has a full load of reclaimed solid oak barrels available, ideal for makers, upcyclers, small businesses and creative projects. They are being offered at an excellent price.

What is available:

- 156 barrels per full load
- £15 per barrel when taking the full load
- Total: £2,340
- Delivery included to mainland UK as far south as Birmingham

If you are based further south, delivery can be arranged at an additional £1 per barrel.

These are high-quality, heavy-duty oak casks that are perfect for furniture builds, garden features, fire pits, bars, retail displays, planters and a wide range of other creative uses.
