Structural Restoration of a Grade II Listed Church, Kent ⛪
Historic churches present a unique set of demands. Ageing stonework, deteriorating roof structures, and the strict requirements of listed building consent mean there is little room for error and even less tolerance for contractors who don't understand the fabric of old buildings.
When the parish council approached us, the church had been showing signs of structural movement for several years. The roof timbers were failing, sections of the external stonework had begun to spall, and the lead flashing had reached the end of its serviceable life. The building needed a contractor who could work sensitively within a live place of worship, coordinate with conservation officers, and deliver to a high standard without disrupting the community it served.
⚒️ Our Approach
We began with a thorough assessment of the existing structure, working alongside the appointed conservation officer to agree a scope of works that met both the practical and heritage requirements of the project.
Our in-house carpentry and roofing teams handled the roof structure and covering works directly - no subcontracting, no loss of quality control. New oak timbers were sourced and cut to specification in our own joinery workshop, ensuring the repair matched the original character of the building. External stonework was repointed using a lime mortar mix appropriate to the age of the building, and new lead flashing was installed to a traditional roll-cap detail.
Throughout the project, we maintained close communication with the parish council, adjusting our programme around key services and community events.
✔️ The Outcome
The project was completed on programme and within budget. The church roof is now structurally sound and weathertight, the stonework stabilised, and the building's historic character fully preserved. The parish council has since returned to us for ongoing maintenance works, a relationship we're proud to continue.
If you're responsible for a listed building or historic structure in Kent, Sussex, or Surrey, we'd be glad to have a conversation.
