SATRA's Intensive leather course
15th to 16th October 2025

SATRA's Intensive leather course is aimed at manufacturers, sourcing companies and retailers of all types of footwear, leathergoods, gloving, garments, accessories and upholstery. It is ideal for newly appointed, as well as more experienced technologists, designers and buyers.

A wide range of topics are covered during the course including:

- Raw material defects – a review of different damage that can be caused on the farm, in transport and at the slaughter house

- Hide and skin structures – we will investigate how the skins of cattle, sheep, goats and pigs differ in structure and consider selection of appropriate raw material for the final end product

- Leather making processes - identifying the key process stages and the importance of them in regards to the properties of the final leather

- Leather identification - we will look at the internationally recognised descriptions and definitions for different leather types (such as aniline, semi-aniline, pigmented, nubuck, suede etc) and leather-related materials

- Sustainable leather - an overview of the sustainability credentials of leather and how we can verify claims made

- Leather grading – understanding the importance of reaching agreement on useability of leather between the tannery and the leather product manufacturer

- Introduction to testing and specifications – we will look at how these can be used to aid product development, routine quality assurance and help with problem solving

- Restricted substance testing and legislation – globally there is legislation relating to restricted chemicals and many brands also produce their own restricted substance lists

- Investigating leather problems - examples of typical customer complaints

Whether galloping through a cross-country course or enjoying a quiet hack down a country lane, equestrian sports carry inherent risks.
While helmets have long been a staple of rider safety, body protectors are just as vital - and their effectiveness hinges on rigorous testing and certification.

The standard EN 13158:2018 sets the benchmark for impact resistance, protective coverage, and chemical safety. It defines three protection levels, with Level 3 offering the highest safeguard for high-risk activities. But it’s not just about absorbing impact - protectors must also be tested for weak points like zip closures and hinged points, adaptability and adjustability, and performance in higher temperatures.

SATRA plays a key role in ensuring these garments meet the mark. Our testing services cover everything from protective coverage to chemical innocuousness, helping manufacturers meet CE and UKCA requirements and giving riders peace of mind.

In the build-up to one of the most important PPE trade shows - the A+A health and safety exhibition - we'll be running a series of informative posts to illustrate some of the key areas of expertise in which SATRA can help our customers.

Protecting hearing in the workplace and noisy environments is vital. Demonstrating that hearing defenders confirm to relevant parts of the EN 352 series of testing methods is one of many services we carry out at SATRA. This includes ergonomic and performance testing which utilises our hemi-anechoic chamber.

Products protecting from the risks associated with harmful noise fall into PPE category III. In order to be placed on the EU or UK market, hearing protectors require the involvement of a Notified Body for EU-Type examination (CE marking) and ongoing production control.

In the last of our posts in the series on garment testing we consider design.

Material performance is a key factor, but even with great material performance, flawed design can undermine everything.
Ensure your garments are compliant with design assessment checks.

Can your gloves offer protection against pesticides?

SATRA offers comprehensive certification and testing services to help you meet the requirements of ISO 18889:2019, the international standard for gloves protecting against pesticide exposure.
This standard classifies gloves into three types:

G1 - Where the potential risk is relatively low
G2 - Where the potential risk is higher and includes mechanical protection
GR - Where protection is required at the fingertips and palm only

By certifying your products with SATRA, you gain the ability to affix the ISO 18889:2019 pictogram to your glove packaging and user information - enhancing trust and credibility with your customers.

SATRA also conducts the mechanical protection testing specified in ISO 18889 and pesticide permeation testing to EN ISO 19918:2017+A1:2021. This uses a pesticide surrogate challenge chemical to determine the cumulative permeation.
We recently presented a webinar on this topic, which can be viewed on the webinar page of our website. https://www.satra.com/resources/webinars.php?q=pesticide&dm_i=7HR9,AAQX,VS4B9,1BQXE,1

You can also read a technical article about ISO 18889:2019 and the EN ISO 19918:2017+A1:2021 test method here. https://www.satra.com/spotlight/article.php?id=576&dm_i=7HR9,AAQX,VS4B9,1BQXE,1

If your certificate already lists EN ISO 374-1:2016+A1:2018 - it might be easier than you think to add this additional claim!
