Welcome our new baby
.. a brand new Maeda MC405c Mini Spider Crane joins the fleet.

Designed to combine impressive lifting performance with a compact tracked footprint, the MC405C is particularly well suited to projects where access or available working space can make the use of larger conventional cranes difficult. Its crawler tracks allow the machine to travel into restricted working areas before its four outriggers are deployed to create a stable lifting platform.

Despite its relatively compact dimensions, the Maeda MC405C has a maximum rated lifting capacity of 3.83 tonnes at 2.7 metres, a maximum working radius of 16 metres and a maximum lifting height of 16.8 metres. With an optional fly jib, lifting height can be increased to approximately 20.7 metres.

At just 1.38 metres wide when travelling, the MC405C is a useful option for restricted-access sites, industrial environments and locations where manoeuvring space is limited. Its tracked undercarriage and configurable outrigger arrangement provide additional versatility once it reaches the lifting position.

Hiab Hero 🦸‍♂️

Hot tub delivery with a difference in Plymouth. 🏡

Our Fassi Hiab was recently called in to lift a large hot tub into a residential back garden in Plymouth, where restricted access meant a conventional delivery simply wasn’t possible.

The spa was carefully secured using lifting straps and chains before being lifted from the vehicle and manoeuvred over the property boundary into position.

With its stabilisers deployed, the lorry-mounted Fassi Hiab provided the reach and flexibility needed to complete the lift safely, without requiring direct vehicle access into the garden.

It’s a great example of how Hiab crane hire can provide a practical solution when walls, fences, hedges and restricted access stand between a delivery and its final destination.

42 Tonne Fuel Storage Tank ✅

Another busy week for our Liebherr LTM1300-6.3, this time supporting the movement of a substantial 42-tonne fuel storage tank from Herefordshire to Hinckley, Leicestershire.

Our 300-tonne mobile crane was first deployed in Herefordshire to carefully lift the tank from its position and load it onto specialist transport.

With a load of this size and weight, the operation required detailed planning, appropriate rigging and controlled handling to ensure the tank was safely transferred onto the waiting vehicle.

But our involvement didn’t stop there.

Following its journey to Hinckley, the Sparrow team was back on hand the following day to unload and position the same 42-tonne tank at its destination, providing specialist lifting support at both ends of the move.

Another job demonstrating the versatility of the LTM1300-6.3 and our ability to support the movement of heavy industrial equipment across the UK.

When its not a level playing field. 📐

Our Liebherr LTM1060-3.1 was recently called into action in the rural South West to install a bespoke shepherd hut supplied by Greendown Shepherd Huts Ltd.

The hut needed to be lifted from the delivery vehicle and carefully positioned at its final location within a picturesque countryside setting.

The challenge? Uneven, sloping ground.

Careful planning and correct outrigger setup were essential to establish a stable working platform before the lift could begin. Once set up, our experienced team carefully manoeuvred the shepherd hut across the landscaped site and lowered it precisely into position.

Shepherd huts are becoming an increasingly popular choice for luxury holiday accommodation, glamping sites, garden offices and countryside retreats, but getting them into some of the more remote locations can require specialist lifting equipment.

The Liebherr LTM1060-3.1 proved ideally suited to the job, providing the reach, manoeuvrability and lifting capability needed to complete the installation safely and efficiently.

⚙️ Our sister company in action for a Silencer & Attenuator Machinery Installation in Plymouth.

Sparrow Installation Services were on site in Plymouth to install silencers and attenuators around a backup generator. Our 3-man gang used a JCB 540/170 telehandler with jib attachment, jacks and skates to get it done:

✅ Lifted the silencers onto the steelwork
✅ Tele'd the load into the building, then jacked and skated it over the installed generator
✅ Positioned the inlet and outlet attenuators (around 3 tonnes each) into openings on both sides of the building using fork extensions

🏋️‍♀️ 7 tonnes moved. 1 day. Job completed.

⚓️ Anchors away... for a screening machine. What is that?

Our Demag AC100/4L was recently deployed to Portbury Docks to tranship a 22-tonne mobile screening plant, safely transferring the equipment between transport for the next stage of its journey.

A mobile screening plant is a large piece of tracked or wheeled machinery used to separate materials by size. Commonly used in quarrying, construction, demolition and recycling, it processes materials such as soil, stone, aggregates and construction waste through vibrating screens, producing different grades that can be reused, recycled or prepared for further processing.

Operating within a busy dockside environment, the lift required careful planning, accurate rigging and close coordination between everyone involved. With its strong lifting performance and precise control, the Demag AC100/4L was ideally suited to handling this substantial piece of equipment safely and efficiently.

Biogas Lift 🚜

We support sustainable Energy Projects Across the South West.

Renewable energy projects continue to play an important role in our workload, and recently our team has been supporting the construction of new biogas facilities at two locations across the South West.

Our Tadano AC 3.060-1 was on site in Plymouth, while our Liebherr LTM1150-5.3 was working in the sunshine at Bude, with both cranes used to install large concrete panels forming new biogas tanks.

Biogas tanks, also known as digesters, are sealed structures where organic waste naturally breaks down without oxygen, producing renewable biogas that can be used as a sustainable source of energy.

Although the weather conditions were very different across the two sites, the objective remained the same: careful planning, accurate lifting and safe, precise installation.

Projects like these highlight the important role specialist crane hire plays in supporting the UK’s growing renewable energy sector.

Specialist Fuel Arm Installation at Cattedown Wharves, Plymouth

Our Liebherr LTM 1200-5.1 was recently deployed to Cattedown Wharves in Plymouth to support a specialist installation on behalf of Flotech Systems.

Configured with 76 tonnes of ballast, the crane was used to complete a precise fuel arm installation in Plymouth within a live operational wharf environment. With existing structures and equipment surrounding the lift area, the project required careful planning, controlled manoeuvring, and a high level of precision throughout.

Thanks to the excellent coordination and teamwork from everyone involved, the installation was completed safely, efficiently, and on schedule, helping to keep the wider project firmly on track.

🎶🎹 Hitting the high notes and orchestrating the perfect lift.

Moving a piano from a third-floor apartment is not your everyday removal job.

Last month in Newton Abbot, our Volvo Fassi Hiab was called into action to assist with the safe removal of a piano that was too large and cumbersome to move through the building.

A Hiab made perfect sense for this type of move. Rather than attempting to manoeuvre a heavy, delicate instrument through narrow stairwells, tight corners, and shared internal spaces, the lift could be carried out externally from the roadside. This helped reduce manual handling, lowered the risk of damage to the piano and building, and allowed the team to complete the removal in a controlled and efficient way.

Working carefully from the apartment, the piano was lifted directly out, lowered safely to ground level, and transported into secure storage. It will remain there until the homeowner’s new property is ready, when it will be delivered and installed in its new home.

Specialist moves like this require detailed planning, precise handling, and the right equipment to protect both the item and the surrounding property.
