Proud to unveil a truly unique project – the first submerged bird hide in the country for RSPB 🐦🌊
Delivered in some of the harshest weather conditions, this build showcases precision engineering, craftsmanship, and a deep respect for the surrounding environment.
🔹 Groundworks & Structure
All groundworks completed to exacting standards, including multiple concrete levels and a 19m anti-slip resin ramp for safe, accessible entry. Gulley pot with bespoke 316 stainless steel frame & lid, aco drains all connected to a pumping chamber that discharges back into the lagoon.
A galvanised steel frame sits seamlessly on the concrete structure, externally clad in striking corten steel with integrated guttering and downpipes.
🔹 Interior Craftsmanship
Internally, the space is finished in beautiful larch cladding, creating a warm, natural environment. The lower viewing area features specialist aquarium glazing with a 316 stainless steel frame, offering an incredible, immersive perspective of wildlife.
🔹 Designed for Purpose
Carefully framed viewing windows align with key sightlines across islands and habitats, alongside a dedicated photo hatch for large-lens cameras. Stepped seating platforms and stairs—crafted on-site from larch—lead to a sliding pocket door opening into a partially enclosed picnic area, complete with accessible, powder-coated steel benches finished in larch.
🔹 Environmental Integration
Externally, waterproofed concrete walls are reinforced with large granite rocks to combat erosion while actively encouraging marine life—creating a habitat where crabs and wildlife can thrive.
With the sluice gate set to open in the coming weeks, we’re excited to see the full environmental impact of this one-of-a-kind build come to life.
A project that blends innovation, sustainability, and craftsmanship—and one we’re incredibly proud to have delivered.
